If you go by who actually beat their notable opponents, it's Mayweather. If you go by who fought the better opposition, no one in this era beats out De La Hoya. He has the toughest resume, win or lose, of arguably the last 20-25 years. Mayweather, Hopkins, Whitaker, Mosley, Chavez, G. Hernandez, Camacho, Trinidad, Pacquiao, Quartey, Vargas, Sturm, Mayorga, Gatti, Castillejo, Ruelas, Rivera, Leija, Gonzalez, Molina. But lost against Mayweather, Hopkins, Mosley, Trinidad*, Pacquiao, and arguably Sturm. For Mayweather: G. Hernandez, Corrales, Castillo, Marquez, De La Hoya, Mosley, Hatton, Cotto, Guerrero, Gatti, Judah, Ortiz, Baldomir, Sosa, Manfredy, Corley, Chavez, C. Hernandez, Gerena, Augustus, G. Vargas, Pep. With no losses. It depends who you rather be, fight a who's who of ATG's and HOF'ers, but with like 6-7 losses, including not even beating one of the ATG's you fought, through. Or fight a who's who of HOF'ers and very good fighters and beat them all. I rather be Mayweather. Both are monetarily comfortable, both are popular, both are champions in 5 weight classes with DLH being 9x champion and Floyd being 8x champion.
???? just having the name on there doesn't mean anything when it's a failure 2003-2005 McDonalds *Served burgers n ****, did a good job, highest store revenue in the state during tenure 2006-2009 Merrill Lynch *Scrubbed toilet bowls and lost the company millions when I sneaked a picture of my c0ck into the prospectus
Why are you mixing and matching random views by posters? I have DLH narrowly winning against Quartey and Sturm. Even if he did lose to Sturm, it's a higher division than Floyd ever even fought at, and DLH was outsized. The way you phrase "what to do with those losses" shows the flawed logic of today's fans. Greatness is not about who you avoided losing to, it's who you beat, what you accomplished.
One loss today means you're virtually finished as a top level fighter in the eyes of fans. Even the promoters and fighters seem to be taking this sort of approach now. Sad, and only increases the chances of the best fights not being made.
FYI to the deluded, Oscar lost to Felix Trinidad. And shame on any boxing fan who tries to pretend he "deserved" that victory.
If you win 7 rounds, barring any deductions, you won the fight. Your personal feelings on the matter don't change the rules of boxing. Yeah, the type of mentality has been seeping through the sport. I'm not sure what it is. Internet culture may be a part of it. Another might be the heavy marketing of Floyd's 0. His presence is good for the sport overall, but phrases like "leftovers", "already lost", "already been knocked out" are being parroted by fighters and fans alike.
Oscar moved up to WW a fought Ike, Sweet Pea , SSM & Tito , which only Sweet Pea fought Tito and none of the others fought each other. Could Floyd step up and fight four great WW's?
Resume? De La Hoya, easily. His list of opponents for a cash-cow is amazing. Deserves nothing but maximum respect for the challenges he took on.
