Better Resume: OSCAR DE LA HOYA or ROY JONES Jr?

    I wouldn't say going to fight at heavyweight, against anybody, is a particularly easy path for a light heavyweight.

    The unfortunate thing about Jones is his prime was not put to its best use, like so many today. Yet strangely, now he is completely past prime he is still fighting and taking on the best challenges when we wish he would retire.

    What is the psychology behind that?

    I think Roy struggled for motivation because none of his peers, were really his peers, he was head and shoulders above even the best fighters at the time, when that is the scenario, it must be easy to get into a rhythm of fighting and beating lesser opponents and taking home massive cheques and lots of adulation for doing so. The Ruiz fight must have been the most satisifying thing in the world for Roy; finally a challenge worthy of him. I suppose thats a very negative way to look at things though, he has a decent enough resume, and incredible achivements.

    Clinton Woods is a former world title holder and a good fighter, who Jones completley out classed, so yeah, its a good win :-( (espcially in the context of RJJ's resume).

    De la Hoya's lost to a lot of good fighters. RJJ's beaten a lot of good fighters.

    De La Hoya has beaten MORE good fighters than RJJ.

    You need to define resume.

    If, by resume, you mean the overall talent he faced, win or lose, Oscar probably has the best resume of any fighter in the past 20 and certainly faced better competition than Roy.

    If you want to include in the resume, how a guy fared in those fights, then Roy edges it for me. I suppose that would be RECORD rather than RESUME.

    I'm not going to consider Roy's over-the -hill work (Post Ruiz, or about the age Oscar pulled off his last meaningful victory).

    But if you count the 50 or so fights leading up to that, he was undefeated (DQ notwithstanding, and you saw what he did pissed-off, in the rematch) and had titles from middle to heavy, easily beating two legends along the way and scarcely losing any rounds. Montel did passably well against him (first time) and Bernard was not embarrassed, but other than that, he toyed with everyone.


    So, by resume, Oscar.

    By accomplishment, Roy.

    Enough with the title holder garbage. Woods was not THE champion. Who cares about trinket title belts? Matter of fact Roy NEVER beat anyone who was THE champion of the division he was in at the time.

    Also, and I hate to keep having to post this for Roy's fan boys but he never beat a unified, linear, or undisputed champion in his career.

    The guys 'resume' is crap.
