Well, Maher did beat the holy trinity of Joe Goddard, Frank Slavin, and George Godfrey. And as you just said in the other thread, all 3 were better than Jimmy Young.

Goddard, Slavin and Godfrey are very solid wins. On top of that, he also beat Choynski, O'Donnell, Fallon, Daly and top black contenders of this era (unlike most white fighters back then).

Bully for him. Not one of those guys was on the level of Ken Norton or Jimmy Young.

Not on Norton level, but definitely on Young level.

You know they fought, right? Norton won a controversial split decision that many, myself included, scored to Young. A 70s fan should know that.

Yes, but Young also lost a lot of times to very underwhelming opponents. Young beat Foreman to a clear decision, does it mean that he was better than George as well?

Not in his prime, he didn’t. Not legitimately, anyway.

Solid wins, but Godfrey was nothing that special, and all were significantly past it.

Choynski was absolute peak. He also drew with a peak Sharkey(looked like winning) and a peak Ruhlin.

I meant specifically those mentioned, not all his wins in general.

I find their careers somewhat similar.

They both perished within a swords length of the flag.

There was just that one last man that they could not get past.
