Shavers had good skills. He was just born at the wrong time with Ali and Holmes on top.

IMO, he was better than Maher.

Shavers was crude as hell. Dangerous and good at what he did, but very crude.

Very crude? Harsh. He had enough skill to catch Holmes, Ali and Young

Give him a second look, he hit hard to the body and had decent hand speed. Skills where there.

Both massive punchers, both a bit fragile. Maher had better stamina, and crazy as you may think, he probaly hit harder and more accurately. Shavers was bigger and heavier, a pick 'em fight, it's not going any distance. I pick Maher.
As for resume, Maher's is deeper, Godfrey, Choynski, Goddard, Ruhlin,Slavin, O'Donnell, Klondike, CC Smith, Kennedy, and effectively wins over Hall and McAuliffe. Draw with Sharkey and a crazy long career at the top. Shavers resume is better top loaded, a green Young, Ellis, Clarke, KO Smith, Norton, Bugner. better wins in my opinion but poorer defeats too, Stander, Cobb, Mercado, Stallings in his best 12 years, Maher only lost to Fitz, Goddard(avenged) in his best twelve best years. Both very good contenders who couldn't crack the top guys as Janitor said. Very similar fighters and careers.

    He was that day.

Hey, what do we know about the state of mind and body of each of Peter Maher’s opponents? If Young caught George on a bad day, maybe Peter caught some of those guys on bad days, too.

I know this: Shavers has a first-round KO of a guy who beat Muhammad Ali (arguably more than once) and a third-round KO of a guy who beat George Foreman.

What are the top accomplishments of Maher’s best opponents that he knocked out?

Well he ko’d choyniski who knocked out jack Johnson and he basically ko’d Klondike (dropped him 5x in a round before Klondike tackled him and jumped on his stomach getting dq’d) So he has two wins over guys that beat Jack Johnson

I like his resume more than Shavers it’s deeper (but he did fight many more bouts) but I rarely pick pre Dempsey guys to win over modern fighters. So I think Shavers would win H2h

Yes, I do think that sounds a bit crazy!

I'm aware, that you are the authority here on Maher, and I certainly respect your opinion.. but a LH who fought 120 years ago, and punched harder and more accurately (without film, how can we ascertain this?) than Shavers? Sorry, I don't buy that!

As for stamina... most of Maher's fights were 4 or 6 rounders. In a total of 183 bouts, he went past the 8th round only twice! Shavers went past 8 rounds 14 times in a total of 89 fights. So how do we know, that Maher had better stamina?

Shavers was a late starter, at 25. Maher was 19 (?), when he begun his journey. I’d suggest that a boxer’s best 12 years can mean something quite different, from one protagonist to the next.

For example, Half of Shavers 14 losses occurred after he’d turned 35. Of the remaining 7, there were a couple of losses inside his first 18 months to 2 years, as a pro.

That leaves 5 defeats Shavers suffered during what were his actual best years (probably ‘73-‘79, inclusive).

And, while it is an interesting exercise to conduct, I don’t think electing to set a timeframe and applying it across two boxers’ ledgers, to compare and contrast, necessarily allows for a sound comparison.

Stopping Jack Johnson (Choynski and Klondike) and beating Fitzsimmons (Hall) doesn't sound bad either.

Young was good, but he's massively overrated due to his Foreman and Ali fights. What makes him better than them? Or someone like Choynski?

Great performances, which are visually verifiable and are wrapped in ringside testimony, help a lot in making an assessment.

Maher was born in 1866 not 1869.
