It would be better for the sport of boxing if Luis Ortiz beats Deontay Wilder. Ortiz would be willing to unify the titles with Joshua and then fans can have ONE heavyweight champion. Wilder will always avoid Joshua.
Arreola and Stiverne II? No, not a chance. Stiverne was basically retired by that point and hadn't had a meaningful win in about three years. It was the height of corruption that he was installed and remained as mandatory after his godawful performance against a journeyman in Rossy and his failed drug test in the run up to the Povetkin fight. Arreola hadn't won his last four fights, was busted for drugs in his prior fight (a robbery against Kauffman) and was totally shot by the time Wilder fought him, with about two weeks notice. Even worse. Washington? Yeah, why not. Washington was undefeated, prime and hovering around the top fifteen at the time Wilder fought him. He was no better or worse than Joshua fighting Breazeale. Szpilka was a decent fringe contender with chin issues. Not a brilliant opponent, but a decent replacement after Glazkov pulled out. Wilder should definitely get credit if he wins cleanly against Ortiz. That goes without saying. It's irrelevant how old Ortiz looks, or how many paper belts he's nabbed (Martin had a belt at one time, don't forget), he's still a top fighter and by far one of the best names any heavyweight could have on their resume. Regarding his 'struggles' against Scott and Allen, they were in reality one-sided drubbings of a fighter that refused to engage and a fighter with a world class beard that had never been stopped or come close to being hurt before. Pointless to criticise him for those two fights considering he did exactly what he had to do against the types of fighters he was up against.
Make it happen Dibella/Haymon! Wilder vs African Elephant for the WBC Hybrid title! Winnder faces Stiverne! Epic!
Take a look at the first one or two years and who AJ fought there: Skelton, Airich, Bakhtov, Zumbano, Johnson. And then it started: Whyte, Martin, Breazeale, Molina, Wlad, Takam and finally Parker. Wilder is not even CLOSE to this and he is a pro for almost 10 years. I even think Wlad TKO is better than the whole Wilder resume. Wilder had one Top 10 opponent in 10yrs as a pro. Pretty says tells it all.
Wilder's title choices have been the worst I've seen for any tenured alphabet champion. He's finally matched vs. Ortiz, who his old Cuban trainers whisper is in his 40's. With a fight all but guaranteed for Joshua, Wilder's management is taking a risk, which is why I think this fight is fishy as they have managed him very carefully to avoid risks. Why take a risk NOW? I don't know.
He's not close to fighting guys like Whyte, Martin, Breazeale and Molina? Think you need to reconsider that statement.
Wilder fought Molina, that's it. Breazeale is a Top 10 hw, same for Whyte. You can rate those guys as you want but still Top 10. Parker also. And as i said: Even Wlad alone is better than the whole Wilder resume.
Scott was top ten at one point as well, perhaps at the time Wilder fought him. At any rate, all sorts of gubbage have entered the top ten over the years; it's not a clear measure of quality. In reality neither Whyte nor Breazeale are genuine top ten heavies in the sense that a win over them should rank higher than a win over someone like Duhaupas or Washington. Play around with the stats all you like, but it's a bit of a wasted effort IMO. Parker's obviously a top fighter, but then so is Ortiz. Not sure why you're not acknowledging that. Wlad's obviously head and shoulders above anyone else on either man's resume. You won't find too many people arguing otherwise.
Damn, Wilder's getting his ass kicked in this poll - just like he will if his management actually puts him in the ring with Joshua. Can't wait until this glass-jawed FRAUD is exposed!!
