Im not an expert, but I think Judo may have been closer in the past to what Combat Sambo is.

Really, because I read that Fedor started Sambo at age 10. He didn't start training in striking finally until 2000. "In 2000, he started studying striking with arms and legs under coach Alexander Vasilievich Michkov." Now of course he does Combat Sambo. Both Fedor and his brother started in Sambo, Combat Sambo is just an extenson.

Arlovski won a Silver medal at the Sambo World Championships. I never herd of him of doing Combat Sambo. I seen Arlovski's first fight, his striking didn't look very good. Arlovski was actually knocked out cold by a drunk. But Andrei has really improved his striking.

"Sambo" is WAAAY too broad of a word. It literally means "self defense without weapon." Which is everything. For example sambo that they teach in "Spez Naz" is the one that has disarmament techniques besides striking and submissions. Sport Sambo is probably the closest to Judo except the things you've mentioned about chokes and leg locks. I think Sambo is best for leg locks because it specializes in them with plenty techniques.

There are few less interesting discussions to engage in than who thinks their own martial art is superior to others. Every art is useful to one who practices it. How the individual applies the techniques learned is always going to a subjective and individual experience. Not every Sambo fighter is going to be able to fight like Fedor and Arlovski.

I just wanted to say something about everyone dissing BJJ as a self defense. You guys must be thinking a jujitsuan is going to pull guard or something in the street and let four guys stomp him in the face. BJJ has it's own throws - while not as dynamic as judo or san shou or sambo - are still extremely effective. Beyond that, BJJ should be used almost like catch-as-catch-can submission wrestling. Secure a takedown and grab the first submission you can - when that breaks - move on to the next guy.

If I had to pick one fighter to represent how BJJ should be used in combat, it would be Renzo Gracie. He secures a quick takedown and then slides into an instant submission. His fights in the early World COmbat Championship were classic examples of this - as was his instant submission over world champion kickboxer and former UFC heavyweight champion - Maurice Smith.

    My two cents.

Well I agree with most of what you said the problem is that most BJJ gyms hardly ever practice takedowns. Most BJJ grappling starts on the knees and very little practice is put into takedowns. You really have to go to an MMA gym to get any decent takedown knowledge and then they teach mostly wrestling.

If you had one grappling art to learn for self defense I would choose judo over BJJ for the greater emphasis on throws and the fact that they still teach submissions. Guys on the street are pretty lacking in submission defense so all the extra ground technique really goes to waste when all you're looking to do is throw/takedown then mount/knee on belly and GNP or look for a sub.

But yeah BJJ certainly will work for self defense. I've trained both but prefer Judo so I might be a bit biased =P

Agree BJJ doesn't have great takedowns at all not very explosive. For a self defence I would pick Judo because if you throw someone once or twice they will probably stop if you hit them they will get pissed off.
