I admit that I have watched more Ward's matches. Honestly, I can not answer this question, it is too difficult for me. Maybe, I should add that RJJ's style is/was more fan friendly, but still I can not decide....
It depends what criteria you use. A lot of people think that Roy was just a great athlete and he wasn't that skilled. But they went hand in hand. Roy used a wider variety of punches and his in-fighting skills were incredible. Andre is also highly skilled and I'm tipping him to beat Kovalev if he's 100% and he fights to his full capabilities.
From a technical stand point Ward is better, Ward is better inside, in the clinches and I think is more adaptable with a more rounded skill set. But then Jones Jr while clearly relied heavily on his physical attributes developed a skill set that was unparalleled for his talents. He was more dangerous with both hands than Ward, who mainly relies on his left hand and he could improvise moves mid fight that you simply can't teach. And yes he was less adaptable but then he really never needed to adapt much because nobody could beat his plan A and the one guy that did Griffin, in the rematch saw what Jones Jr could do when he had figured you out and adapted. Roy developed a style that was smart and hard to beat, he'd lean forward slightly, hands down, drawing a lead from an opponent, slip the shot and shift his weight back until he was perfectly balanced and counter, much like Mayweather's pull counter, only he could do with with every punch from either hand with KO power. So really depends upon your criteria and opinion. Ward, more rounded and better fundamental technique, Roy more one dimensional, but wow what a dimension, power, speed, unpredictability, Ward could never do what Roy did and vice versa.
:good Great post. Like we've both alluded to, it depends what criteria you use. Andre's great inside, but we know he can be dirty. Roy was amazing inside. He threw double and treble hooks and uppercuts off either hand. Roy had some of the best in-fighting skills I've ever seen.
Roy Jones Jr. is boxing's version of Tiger Woods. RJJ's had a skill set unlike any other, and he dominated the sport for an extended period of time. Then, all of a sudden, his skills disappeared.
Excellent post ! I will never pretend that I am an expert, because, I am not. Honestly I am (from my childhood) some kind of hard-core fan, and I like too much to listen or read opinions of boxing experts. Could we say that the both of them are/were top 10 pfp (1990-2016) ?
Ward had more technical skill but rjj was just a freak athlete who in his prime id pick to beat any boxer in history hand to hand
Tough call. Better skills? Probably Ward, but Roy was more dangerous. Ward does a lot of subtle things that go unnoticed.
I believe that at his peak at 160lbs there isnt a fighter at that weight that ever laced up a pair of gloves that couldve beaten Roy. Roy was unbelievable. I got to see him live in the second Griffin fight and the punch he ko`d Griffin with i felt in my chest like the bass from a speaker. i sh#t you not!
By a lightyear in space RJJ. Ward has a skillset suited for lazy underacheivers content on ****ting out their life by a hair by any means necessary, ya know like todays democrat party voter. True skill entertains.:thumbsup
