Ali-Frazier. Bowe-Holyfield definitely had it's moments over the three fights but Ali-Frazier had more consistent quality action.
Well Frazier vs Ali 2 was a bad fight, overall Fraizer vs Ali 1 and Frazier vs Ali 3 were better fights. But Holyfield vs Bowe had no weak fights in the trilogy.
Ali-Frazier is the better trilogy on the strength of the first and third fights but fights 1 and 2 of Bowe-Holyfield were great ones as well. I haven’t seen Ali-Frazier 2 for years but don’t remember it being much of a fight. Bowe-Holyfield 3 had some drama but was a substantially weaker fight than their first two - I thought Evander looked awful and that was against a pretty poor version of Bowe.
I'm of the school of thought that maintains Ali-Frazier II,viewed in isolation, was a very good fight. It's simply that it pales, comparatively, alongside fights I & III.
Well i disagree Ali held onto Frazier constantly, there wasn't much in the way of two way action like fights 1 and 3. But if you enjoyed fair enough but i have to say i don't agree at all. For me it was like Barrera vs Morales 2 it lacked drama.
I think the first Holy/Bowe fight is comparable to manilla/FOTC in terms of high level skill+mayhem and aggression. The 2nd fights of both trilogy were a bit lukewarm, and the 3rd fights gave a definitive conclusion with more mindless slugging and less technical skill. The only problem with Holy vs Bowe 3 was that Hoylfield clearly wasn't all there physically and probably shouldn't have been cleared to fight. It wasn't Bowe's fault, he did a fantastic job getting off the floor to win a sensational match, but the fight could have been even better if Hoylfield didn't have so many health problems at the time. We had seen Holy look better in the 1st and even the 2nd fight. With that being said, the Ali Frazier trilogy narrowly takes it.
I wasn't wild about the second Holyfield-Bowe, the fan man was detrimental to the viewing and I felt Bowe deserved the Champion's benefit of a doubt. Ali-Frazier was overall more interesting to me. As Lennox Lewis said "the name of the sport is boxing", and Ali basically outboxed Joe. True, there was some rule-stretching...I'm not sure there were anymore than in a typical heavyweight boxing match, and damn sure less than the Bowe-Holyfield bouts imo.
Holyfield-Bowe 1 is up there with any HW fight ever. It wasn't two champs both with a valid claim to the lineal title against one another as Ali-Frazier 1 was, but the quality of the fight itself is about as good as it gets. If you like HW boxing and can't enjoy the hell of that fight, well, I don't think you actually like HW boxing.
