the one that manny beat at the 29 year old 145 pound version coming off a beatdown or the 31 year old 154 pound version coming off 3 tko victories and killing his old demons and regaining his confidence back (full credit to manny for beating cotto just saying which one do you think is better)
You mean the 31 year old coming off a great performance against a damaged / over the hill Margarito and two medicore performances against Yuri Foreman and a shot Mayorga? I'll take the younger version who was still basically in his prime and fighting tougher competition. Although I think that this version is still very good and looks like he's got his will to win back, and will give Floyd a tough fight.
This version is better than the 145 version IMO. Miguel had no legs at 145, lacked a corner and was borderline in limbo coming off the marg tko and clottey fight. I am anxiously waiting to hear what Pedro Luis can formulate as far as the game plan goes. This is a very good match up. The only version of Cotto thats better than the current is 08 Cotto, and even then, now he has the best corner he's ever had.
This is always overlooked. There is no doubt that Pacquiao and Roach had impeccible timing when selecting Cotto, and even more game by making him drain as well. The guy had no corner, no real training camp, focused on meeting the weight demand, and was forced to put up his title. It was as closed to a fixed fight that you can get without it actually being fixed in the literal sense of the word.
'basically still in his prime'?? He was weight drained to **** and got battered by plasterito just a year ago? If the Cotto in 09 was fighting at 154 then he would be better however at 145 he was bustin his balls to get to 145 IMO
It was two pounds. Weight drained? Cotto said he felt great after the fight, and that weight wasn't a problem. Cotto had weighed in at 145 against Judah, and 146 in his PREVIOUS fight. So it was really a one pound difference.
Cotto was fresher in 09, but with a bad corner, maybe drained, coming of a brutal loss and with no desire (proof with the Clottey fight) and with marriage problems. Still this Cotto is a faded one.
He still had his uncle in his corner who was barely showing up to the gym to train him. It was known that Cotto pretty much trained himself since the Quintana fight.
