Relax, son. I saw the Sheika fight. I understood Lacy's deficiences but Calzaghe had not been on US TV, hadn't fought anywhere outside of the UK besides one fight in Copenhagen. No one knew him.

I'm SURE there are "way too excitable" British media, out there. Audley Harrison, anyone?

:huh How do you get that

    Pascal, did nothing at SMW
Taylor, did nothing at SMW and was 1-2 in his last 3 fights
Dirrell, did nothing at SMW biggest win was Oganov
Abraham, coming off a loss did nothing at SMW
Johnson, did nothing at SMW and was a SMW journeyman with more losses at the weight than wins

Froch has a great win over Bute which is not as good as Calzaghes over Kessler and I dont think as good as Calzaghes over Lacy. Then remember Calzaghe beat Eubank a far greater SMW and also beat Veit, Woodhall, Reid, Brewer, Mitchell who were all world class and have been or were SMW champs. Mkertchyan who Calzaghe beat has done more at SMW than Dirrell

Absolutely true, but why was Calzaghe a betting underdog in the UK?

Ottke was a stay at home hypejob.
Froch had a tough night against Johnson, while Bute beat him by shutout, but Froch nullified Butes arsenal, out jabbed him,out manouvered him, then KHTFO.
Triangulations and common opponents mean nothing.

i agree with you 100% that calzaghe wipes the floor with froch resume-wise (and anytime in the ring), just not the way you went about it.

taylor was a flawed genius, and it was because he was 1-2 in his last fights and faltering that he offered froch the fight that set froch on the world stage.

until then, froch was just another junior witter - calling out calzaghe in vain but doing nothing to rival his achievements.

    Froch KO5 Lacy.

Calzaghe doesn't have any explosive victories at all. Hell, even his epic battle with Manfredo Jr. ended a bigger joke than the fight itself.

because he was unknown, and had done nothing convincingly dangerous up to that point except for taking out Veit. No, before anyone says it, beating a stand-in semi-retired Eubank and luck against Reid dont constitute good. classy victories.

If you've not had a good victory and you are unknown then you arent going to be a betting favourite. People tend to bet on knowledge, knowing what your capabilities are. Jeff was from the USA and was widely known.

Are you saying that since the betting was against him as an unknown then it was automatically a great victory?

For instance, little Doncaster football club are largely unknown in England outside their local area, but in say nieghbouring Ireland they would be seen as pretty big in comparison to their local clubs. Its not a great victory for Doncaster if they travel to Ireland and beat Irish top flighters Shamrock Rovers. Its more or less what you'd expect.

Nevertheless, it was a good victory for Zaghes, I wont take that away from him, he showed everyone how clumsy Jeff is.

No, this is not what I'm saying at all. Another poster stated that the only reason that Joe was an underdog in the States was that he was an unknown. If this is the only basis for his underdog status then why would he also be an underdog domestically?

Your point that Joe "had done nothing convincingly dangerous up to that point except for taking out Veit" surely only adds to the stature of the win.

I'm not even sure where to start with this! Who's Doncaster here!?
