Marciano over Moore, for me. Holmes may have been a better heavyweight OVERALL than Moore, but at these respective points in their careers, the Moore who faced Marciano was more dangerous than the Holmes who went up against Tyson.

Perhaps the reason there weren't any additional ko's on the Holmes dossier is that there aren't any punchers on it. Sure don't recall Larry ever wanting another piece of Tyson, did you? And another common denominator with Holyfield/McCall/Mercer; who didn't have an easy time landing their punches on those guys?

People need to lighten up on this site. Too much seriousness.

 No one ever knows when I'm being sarcastic either. But I feel like using a smiley face to show I'm kidding ruins it.

And yet he still performed better than Spinks did, who many picked to beat Tyson. I wouldnt say he looked awful either, but he did admit he was traveling and drinking a lot with his band at the time, but Holmes was always full of hot air when he lost or performed poorly. I dont think it would have mattered, Tyson caught him with a very good righthand that he never recovered from. He was as outgunned as Spinks was to be honest, Tyson just had to chase him down a bit more.

Something that I'm surprised hasn't been brought up. Marciano was 32 at the time of the Moore fight and at the end of a hard career. Tyson was 22 and peaking when he beat Holmes.

I think the manner in which Tyson beat Holmes is very impressive, especially when you consider that Holmes fought on for years against some bangers and was never stopped again.

Holmes did better than Spinks did. I cannot dispute that.

Moore beat Bob Baker by KO, quite impressive in showing his power, Parker was a Big man that Moore KO'd but not in the same league as Baker and Valdez...Archie showed the other side of his repertoire outpointing Nino in 2 fights without exertion. Clarence Henry 32-3-1 was also a big win over a Heavyweight Bomber.

As far as Patterson destroying him. Many a fighter to fight Marciano in a war was never the same, examples would be Walcott KO13 =KO1, Charles W15= KO 8, Lastarza W10, KO 12, Marciano also destroyed many fights like Rex Layne who was 34-1 -2 and had beaten the only man to beat him at that point in time. Layne survived Satterfeild but was KO'd by a light looking punch that severed his teeth at the nubs and ruined Layne foreever. We do not have to mention Carmine Vingo who Rocky put in a coma....Archie took a severe beating off Marciano, despite the flash KD and even though all his skills and savy and power allowed Archie to go 38-4 after Marciano and land some solid shots against the young Ali, 8 years later, I dont think anyone could really say the Marciano beatdown did not take it toll on Archie. I dont think he would last 2 rds with Marciano in a rematch if Moore fought Rocky again instead of Floyd.

I think Alejandro Lavorante in 1962 was probably Moore's best win at heavyweight after the Marciano fight.

Holmes wouldnt have any problem whipping any of Moores HW wins or whipping Moore himself.

Wow, I think the slick hard hitting Moore would be a very difficult match for Holmes. The only comparable fighter Holmes faced was Spinks, who he had a great deal of trouble finding the jab on. Though bigger and more aggressive, Norton used a similar jab deflecting crab guard to Moore, which gave Larry trouble. Moore would also stand a good chance of luring Holmes into a shootout like he did other big jabbers like Valdes and Baker, not Larry's class but the point remains.

Maybe Holmes whips the truley ancient Moore that Ali stopped. But against pre-Patterson Moore, all bets are off. A very interesting matchup.

I don't know: Henry, Baker, Valdes, Satterfield, and Johnson could be tough fights for Larry, he would surely be a favorite but "no problem" I find hard to swallow against a fighter that sometimes struggled against heavy underdogs.

Even though Holmes was older against Spinks I think Moore was better and hit harder than Spinks so I do not see that being an easy fight for Larry. Archie had a mean right as well and had better finishing skills than most guys

Assuming your not being sarcastic  Good to hear. I actually think Tyson beats any version of Holmes, and it was a good enough legacy scalp, but looking at all the facts in this analogy it just falls well short of the unbelivable run Marciano brought to an end to close his out his career. Moore was probably riding one of the hottest streaks in boxing history going in, essentially cleaning out two fairly stacked divisions at the same time. Holmes was an already faded Champion dethroned by Spinks, 2 years retired, and lured back against the hungry Tyson for a huge paycheck.

Here's a great article that details how much Moore accomplished on his way to the Marciano fight.
