Better Victory: Marciano over Moore or Tyson over Holmes?

In the Tyson fight he really didnt show signs of rust to me. He actually was able to win a round or two, which as I said before, was more impressive than Spinks, who was thrashed in 91 seconds. Im not trying to dispute Holmes was off for a good amount of time and wasnt past his best, but I thought Tyson was just able to land a really good shot, and showed how great his finishing skills were even against a pretty savvy fighter more than what Holmes didnt bring to the table that night because of his layoff. :good

Holyfield was shot, of course. But these were top fighters. Apart from Mercer, Holmes was only beating the likes of Paul Poirier and Rocky Pepeli and other has-been trailhorses like Jose Ribalta.
Most of those guys are better compared with Holyfield fighting Jeremy Bates.
But I dont deny that Holmes was a cagier fighter than Holyfield.

Holmes did nothing to prove the perception wrong.

Holmes did NOT win a round against Tyson, nevermind two.
Yes, Holmes proved savvy enough to get as far as the fourth round against a prime Tyson.
And, yes, Tyson took him apart in style.

 

I sensed it before I left my dressing room the night of the fight, January 22, 1988.

As I neared the ring, I had this weird thought : "Why not be the first fighter to refuse to go into the ring ? All those people watching on HBO, I'll amaze them. I'll tell the announcer, "I'll swear I'll fight Tyson next month, right after I have a tune-up. Just not tonight"

This is just typical Holmes banter. He was full of hot air like I said. He realized he wasnt ready when he was walking down the aisle?

 

Well, Holmes was a realist kind of guy, In actuality he probably knew he wasn't good enough before he even signed the contract.

But he put to the back of his mind what losing to Mike Tyson would entail, and that is what dawned on him when he was walking down the aisle.

 

Except when he said Marciano couldnt carry his jockstrap, although he was dead on about Tyson that he would eventually wind up in jail.

It is a little funny that Holmes didnt realize he wasnt ready for the fight until he started his ring walk wouldnt you agree?

 

Tyson-Holmes was a joke fight nobody wanted to see hapen. Even a poster for the fight had a picture of a rocking chair and a cradle...
Marciano- moore was the biggest fight that could have been made at that time. marciano was beating a genuine title holder with a genuine #1 ranking at HW. Its a beter win by a long long way.

regardless of how good holmes was later on this was not the guy tyson fought. He did not earn the tyson shot so he was in no way prepared for a shot. when holmes fought holyfeild he deserved that shot. larry beat mercer easily and Ray fared much beter losing against lewis and holyfeild who were the best active heavyweights that particular year than he ever did with Holmes.
