Here's how bookmakers work: They manipulate the odds in order to get an equal amount of money placed on both contestants. That way they can take a cut of all wagers but not have to dip into their own funds to pay the winners. Get it?

Oscar was a much bigger name than Manny. Casual fans flocked to his fights, and placed a lot of bets. The only way for the bookmakers to get more money on Manny was to set a line that would encourage people to do so.

Revisionist history is forgetting that Oscar looked like drawn and pale at the weigh in.

 

'But Meester Oscar was bigger than Manny. Manny was a 135lb Lightweight who had just beated the great David Diaz.'

'Meester DeLaHoya was coming off the best win of his career against the Gayweather clone Steve Forbes. Meester Oscar had been a 147lb man before so he could be again.'

 

yeah they manipulated it to the point that oscar was still a clear favorite. are you saying that pac was the real bookies favorite?

how did you know? you were just a a 15 year old kid back then eating cookies and milk? did you know the atmosphere in ESB even right after the weigh-in? people are still picking oscar.

Look at DLH the way he is size wise compared to Pac. Look at the difference in muscle tone. atsch

Then look at Oscar when he gets in the ring and takes his robe off. Looked like a ****ing skeleton. Look at the colour of his skin, compare it to when he fought Mayweather at 154.

The bookmakers don't care who will or who should win. All they care about is getting equal money on both sides.

Oscar had more fans than Manny. The bookies were trying to entice bettors to put money on Manny so they set odds that made it riskier to bet on Oscar, more rewarding to bet on Manny.

The odds have absolute jack **** to do with the real expectations of a fight and everything to do with what a bunch of casuals in Vegas for a weekend will bet on.

For the record, Manny's large fanbase now moves lines as well. He was a 3.5 to 1 favorite over Cotto according to the bookies while most dedicated fans and writers considered the fight to be very close.

 

Yes. It was carried live here in the US. Oscar looked rough.

I also saw the Dawson/Ward weigh in. Dawson looked much healthier.

The 135-147 jump is not common for a guy that had 1 fight at LW, esp when 135 was his 5th division. Unprecedented in fact.

It wasn't just the oddsmakers favoring DLH, it was even more lopsided with the experts, and forum posters of course. What was your prediction?

Neither DLH nor Dawson should have fought at the weight. Who had the tougher task, hard to tell. Dawson was younger, but had to drop twice as much weight, had no credentials at 168, unlike DLH at welter. Nobody holds it against Ward that he stayed in his class, but don't you think the fight woulda been more challenging if he was coming up from 147/154, against that same or even worse Dawson?

 

Pretty much shows that they weren't around.

I have watched boxing since early 90's and I could very well see that Oscar was a skeleton at the weigh in. Up until the weigh in I said 50/50 fight, but once I saw the weigh in I said Oscar was going to be dominated and probably retire.

If you can't look at Oscar post weigh in and pre fight and see what some of us, who actually practice the sport see, then that's your handicap. That is your problem and your weakness when arguing with other posters.:deal

 

let's us see your prediction back then? none because you are talking of hindsight. i woukd later bump some threads of people still picking oscar even after the weigh-in.
