Probably because prime Leonard is a much more able fighter (one of the best h2h fighters of all time) than a terribly distracted Tyson.
The Douglas that showed up vs Tyson, beats any version of Tyson imo. I'd rate Duran's performance better than Douglas', because Duran pulled every trick in the book to master Leonard, he had to because Leonard is that good. As great as Douglas' performance was, he basically did the same thing over and over.....jab, right hand, and push Tyson off of him when he got to close......repeating the process over and over. Tyson just did'nt have the goods to make adjustments. Alot more strategy was involved in the way Duran fought vs Leonard.......that was high level boxing at its very best by both fighters.
Lets keep the votes going. I still stick with Douglas the better "PERFORMANCE" For those who remembered how physically and mentally imposing Tyson was in his prime. Douglas fought a masterpiece!! He knocked Mike out! Duran won a close decision. Duran was a live underdog. Buster well..you know
Very fair analysis, semantics really gets in a way when you analyze something like this due to the many interpretation. Its impossible to break performance down due to many aspects. Now I would say that if we think out of the box and make the mental game a bigger factor, which I believe is a can influence performance, then I would have to give the edge to Douglas because like you said Tyson had beaten most of his opponents before any punches were thrown and Douglas broke through that. For me to weather Tysons early storm was an achievement worthy of another topic. What I hope is not happening here is that people might think that Douglas was lucky, this could be further from the truth. He fought near flawless and he looked good executing.
Thats just it. Tyson was'nt physically imposing, he got pushed around by the bigger fighters like Mitch Green and Bonecrusher smith.....Physically, Tyson could'nt impose his strenghth on them....they were to big. .....and we never really found out about Tyson's mental toughness, because no one ever dared to try and fight their fight against him, like Douglas did......instead of coming out timid and in a shell backing up like most bigger fighters Tyson ever faced.......Douglas came out from the opening bell, jabbing and forcing his strenghth upon Tyson. Once Douglas established what no other fighter before him even dared to try......Tyson was putty in Douglas' hands. Douglas established from the opening bell that he was'nt going to get beat by getting bullied.....and Tyson was'nt up to the task of working for it! Leonard did'nt fold so easily, making Duran's performance by far imo the better win. Of course I'm looking at these performances in hindsight......knowing just how tough a fighter physically and mentally Leonard really was......and just how mentally weak Tyson was all along.
Douglas over Tyson no one saw that coming. With Duran he's a ATG and him beating SRL isn't an upset or historic for a guy ranked a top 10 ATG.
Douglas-Tyson. Only a fool would have thought that the 1980 version of Duran, fresh off of a nightmarish reign as LightWeight Champion, would be no match for a welterweight Leonard. Duran had Leonard beat before the fight, with his comments to Juanita. Duran was faster, better defensively, stronger, and with more agility/equal stamina to a Primed Out Leonard. But Douglas? He was a no-hoper. A 43-1 Underdog who quit against Tony Tucker, and he handed King Tyson his ass at the Eggdome.
the Tyson-Douglas outcome was unbelievable. Who thought douglas had a shot? absolutely no one. People knew tyson wasn't in tip tip shape, it wasn't the first time.
Much bigger upset was Douglas over Tyson and the combination he knocked Tyson out with was nasty.....
Duran had a much better opponent in front of him that night and was moving up in weight. Tyson wasn't Iron Mike that night, he wasn't fully prepared and nobody would remember the name Buster Douglas if Tyson had come in prepared. This is the only reason why Douglas won. The people who voted for Tyson/Douglas know this.
Got to be Douglas over Tyson, I actualy think Leonard did very well even tho he had terrible gameplan, am I the only one who thinks that Leonard vs Duran was acutaly a close fight ?
i agree. I think both actually had great gameplans and executed perfectly, but Duran was a threat to Leonard even though Leonard was still expected to win, while Douglas was to of have been blown away by Tyson.
You said Duran was a threat to SRL. Translation...he can possibly beat him just being the way he is. He was a big threat Douglas was to have been blown away and therefore his performance was inferior?? Im confused.
