The thing is not only was Leonard a much better fighter he was inshape for his fight with Duran, where as Tyson quite clearly wasn't from what i saw.

Impressive?? ofcourse its Buster.... he was never given a chance of winning, and being against all odds, he KO'd the king of the heavyweights and the most popular fighter of the time. Duran against SRL was an elite match-up. They both had a high chance of beating each other and wont be as shocking.

The thread starter clearly asked which was the better win.......

......alot of you are picking Douglas because it was a monumental upset at the time and he dominated Tyson the way he did.

Thats not whats being asked here however......clearly history has shown us that Leonard was a superior fighter to Tyson.....thus the task about going about beating a prime Leonard was much more difficult than beating on overrated Mike Tyson.

Tyson did not prove greatness in the ring where it counts, Leonard clearly did (and I'm far from a Leonard fan)

Lining up all the facts that we know of said fighters today.....Duran's win over Leonard clearly is the better win!

If the thread starter has asked who turned in the most dominant performance, then I'd say Douglas, but thats not whats being asked here......

Duran's win over Leonard is the better win!

I asked which was the better win PERFORMANCE wise. Ill keep this simple because brevity is not your strong suit.

You cannot rate a person who barely won a better performance. I dont care if he was fighting Godzilla.

In order to overcome stratospheric odds, you'll have to put on a performance of your life to beat someone like Tyson at that time.

Douglas was not a great fighter, a journeyman. For him to beat any elite fighter, his performance level much be at its highest.

Are you guys insunuating that a close win against SRL is Durans best performance? Thats kind of shortchanging the guy

You guys are also confusing Duran is a much greater fighter than Douglas, therefore his performance is always better. I am talking about a tuk tuk driver beating an elite fighter. Was his performance good to do that?

The performance Douglas put against Tyson was one of the best i've seen.

    I still need to see Leonard/Duran I.

Douglas over Tyson. Yes Leonard when he lost to Duran was better than Tyson when he lost to Douglas, but Tyson was still very dangures and Douglas had to be perfect that night and he was with the notable exception of the knockdown in the 8th round. I am hard presed to think of any heavyweight that I could say for sure would have beaten Douglas that night. Rember this is about one nights work not an entire career.

:lol::lol::lol:There are plenty of Heavyweight that would have beaten Douglas that night......
....Holyfield, Lewis, Bowe, Holmes, Foreman, Ali......just to scratch the surface.....
It is Mike Tyson who did'nt have the tools to even compete with Douglas, as that fight was a one way drubbing in Douglas' favor.

Performance-They're equal imo. Douglas was nearly flawless except for a mis-step that floored him in round 8.

Duran was masterful in the way he executed just about everything he did against a much higher caliber fighter than Douglas did.

Gameplans, strategy and execution- For Douglas it was a simple plan.....half step back shooting the jab, crossing with the right, and violently shoving Tyson away anytime the distance closed. There was'nt a damn thing Tyson was able to do about it, as he was cluelessly getting drubbed.

For Duran it was to get in Leonards head and make him fight his fight.....all along Duran mixing a violent mix of pressure, boxing, defense, headbutting and glove lace lashings that tore into Leonards ears.....

Both plans worked beautifully, but Duran gets a higher credit of execution and strategy shifting throughout the fight because he was up against a much better fighter in Sugar Ray Leonard.

IF you rate it strictly on who dominated the other more......then these two fights would be dwarfed by Mayweather's domination over Arturo Gatti.

The caliber of opposition must be taken into account when assesing who's win weighs more in the overall picture of things.

Though Tyson at the time was looked upon as the baddest man on the planet.......history has shown us that that annointment was overstated.
    Tyson was overrated.

It all depends on how you rate Mike Tyson.
If you think that pre-prison he was one of top 5 Heavyweights of all-time.....then I can see where you would rate Douglas' performance better than Duran's.

I dont hold Tyson to that regard....and the fact that he lost almost every minute of every round vs Douglas and what happened to his career post prison.....to me points to that he was'nt an all-time great heavyweight to begin with.

The Degree of difficulty was far higher for Duran than it was for Douglas, making Duran's win a better one!!!

.....and Chimba, I'll make my posts as brief or as long as I want to make them, thankyou!:bbb:tong

I don't wish to hijack this threed with a side argument but....
As far as careers goes i'd rank Holyfield, Lewis, Bowe, Holmes, Foreman, and Ali. As well as many more including Tyson above Douglas. However I fell on that night he was so focused that he would have overcome any foe.
I would concive that styles make fights and Duglas's Jab and grab style was best suited to beat Tyson (Larry Holmes was efective with it for a few rounds aginst Tyson). Than again the jab and grab style is a prety efective style agsinst anyone.

Buster Douglas giving the "baddest man on the planet" a humbling experience.
