Lewis beating Holyfield clearly Holmes was coming from 2 year absence and lost his last 2 fights. His career in the 90's doesn't count here Holyfield was past his prime, but still dangerous and crafty
What did Holyfield do after he fought Lewis? He Split a trilogy with the great Johnny Ruiz Holmes on the other hand went on to beat Ray Mercer and gave Holyfield a good fight. I'd say these two wins are about even.
It doesn't mean much imo. Holyfield was in shape and active elite HW, even past his prime. Holmes was inactive for 2 years. LH that fought Mercer was better prepared than LH that fought Tyson. Holyfield was bigger name than Holmes in those respective fights. Key word is AFTER
And beat Rahman. Regardless, I think people are focusing too much on what happened after the fights. What Holmes/Holyfield were at the time of the fights is what's important - that's what Tyson/Lewis had to beat. Lewis beat Holyfield in '99, and should get credit for beating whatever Holy was in '99. What Holy was in '00, '01, or '08, etc. shouldn't have any bearing on that.
It certainly shows how a fighter is physically and establishes an end of their prime or start of complete shotness. Could Holmes have done much better had he had a couple tune ups first? Hard to prepare for that version of Tyson.
Holyfield never performed on an elite level after the second Moorer fight. To me he was past his best after the first Moorer fight. He really started the grappling, pushing and butting tactics around the Tyson fights, and got away from the beautiful boxer puncher style he had at his best.
Yes, Holmes was better prepared against Mercer. But he was was also 4 years older. After is the key word because it shows how much Holmes still had left considering he beat Mercer 4 years later. The Holyfield win is a quality win as well, and like I said they're about even, although if I was pushed I'd side slightly toward the Evander win actually.
