I'm confusted. Who's overall skill level are we talking about? And who's the journeman? You surely don't think that Pavlik-Taylor showcased more skills than Martinez-Williams...

    :huh Now I'm confused aswell?

I thought this thread was about "Impact/significance" of the WIN.
    (Using hindsight)

Because The Taylor in question trump's anything Williams as a MW victory.

For me Pavs win is head and shoulders above Martinez. That was a true middleweight showdown with two young undefeated lions.

It was a war and a True middlweight championship showdown. I can't deny that Serg also had a great victory, just not on the same level for me.

It's about the same. We've seen the best of Taylor and Williams isn't finished yet, but at this point it's about the same.

I copied this post from another thread. A win over PDub is a nice win, and it had to be extra sweet for Martinez since he avenged a controversial loss. However, there is no way on God's earth that Martinez/Williams should be viewed in the same league with this **** right here!!!!
    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Jermain Taylor and Kelly Pavlik are two of only five men in history who won the middleweight championship of the world while still undefeated. (We don't count guys who won vacant paper titles. We only count the linear world championship.)

When Taylor fought Raul Marquez, Raul had not lost a fight in 5 years. His last previous loss was Vargas in 1999. Jermain blistered his ass in 9 rounds. When JT fought Edouard, Daniel Edouard was an undefeated contender who just beat 7 shades of **** out of undefeated Willie Gibbs in 4 rounds. Jermain stopped Edouard in 3 rounds, and poor Daniel was never the same. That set up the Hopkins fight, and Jermain "Bad Intentions" Taylor promptly dethroned a living legend.

Pavlik came up the hard way. He fought on ESPN, Versus, Telemundo, et, et. He called out Winky Wright, Arthur Abraham, Jermain Taylor, and generally challenged anybody who mattered, but nobody wanted to hear from Kelly Pavlik. Pavlik only got a break because HBO wanted to make Miranda into a star, and thought Pavlik was the right guy to make Edison look good. Larry Merchant told us the fight promised to be "krunk," and for six and a half rounds the crowd was on it's feet screaming their guts out!

The night finally came when undefeated challenger met undefeated champion and "somebodie's OH had to Go!" That night we witnessed one of the greatest middleweight title fights in history!

Agree with you. I wouldn't want to diminish what an accomplishment a KO 2 of Paul is, but like you said, at the time they fought Taylor was a better fighter. IMO.

i cant believe the poll is so even.

taylor had fought hopkins, wright, spinks, oumma and more. he was a very solid champ and quite a big favourite for the fight, he had pavlik out on his feet at one point.

martinez vs williams saw martinez expected by many to win.

pavlik v taylor easily the better victory

All day. Pavlik wasn't even supposed to be there...in HBO's original plans. When Pav beat Miranda, HBO showed like a 15 min. documentary of Pantera's life and times...then was like " oh yeah, and Kelly Pavlik is here too" as Pav RAN to the ring. Pav threw a wrench all up in their Kool-Aid.:deal:p

the knockout made the Martinez fight stand out. Williams went down slowly. It is rare to see that kind of knockout.

Very true, was a hell of a KO and win for Sergio.

Significance wise though, for the thread....Pav over Taylor all day.

Sergio's win over Kelly is way better too IMO.

    rock on Sergio.

:deal The taylor win itself was better than koing PW at 160 but over all martinez has the better resume/wins than pavlik.

Maybe I should've voted 'about the same', it's a close call.

In Pavlik's case the MW championship changed hands, he was the less skilled and the underdog, it was a dramatic fight and a dramatic comeback with a chilling ending, I remember good (rooted for Kelly). On the other hand, Martinez-Williams was the 154-160 #1 vs #2 showdown, both ranked high P4P and no one expected such shock single punch ending that is likely to be remembered as KO of the decade.

From achievement standpoint the Pavlik win is the better because he earned the championship, from P4P standpoint Martinez' because he earned P4P#2/3 spot, from excitement Kelly's because if was back and forth and from performance Maravilla's, because it was short and one-sided, ending the rivalry.
