Both had impressive wins over up and coming young prospects who were all undefeated at the time. But the question here is, who do you feel had the better two wins? Ike over David Tua and Chris Byrd or Mercer over Morrison and Damiani?
Ike, definitely. Mercer even managed to look terrible vs Damiani, getting soundly outboxed and consistently beaten to the punch until a landed one on the nose and the Italian quit like a...well, like an Italian actually. :yep This was probably his second best win. No one rated Ray as highly as me and I thought he was SuperCrap.
Mercer and it is not even close. Ike was a sick man who should never of been allowed to box, instead should of been given the help he needed to stabilize his illness, an illness that put him in prison. Mercer was a boxer, a fighter, he had an excellent chin, but was smart enough not to walk though punches against world class bangers for fun. Mercer was also able to function in normal life and have a long and fruitful career.
Yeah, I don't get what the **** his mental issues has to do with who's wins were better quality. :rofl
It's almost like he wanted to say 'Ray', thought about it and realised the answer might be 'Ike', so instead he just acted like the oddment he is.
It would still be Mercer; Damiani was undefeated solid pro, yet Mercer showed guts to pull the fight around; and Morrison looked like he might be a little more than hype... but ultimately probably was not. Tua was limited and yet was a little unlucky not to get perhaps a draw from the fight, and Byrd was caught with good punches, something that can happen when a huge man fights a blown up super middle, but Byrd would learn...
This sport is always shooting itself in the foot, without the need to bring up people like Ike.... 20 years ago, this sport was competing with Cricket and Snooker for the #2 spot in the country (Britain), now it is probably below bloody cycling!!!!! But I have already been told off for ranting, so I shall stop.:nut
mercer....we know to little of ike, only that dubious result over tua, which, in reality could have gone either way so was hardly a career defining moment...mercer blew away moorison when morrisons star was on the rise, fought a dumb fight a gainst cagey old larry, but gave prime...surely prime??..lewis fits....brawled with holyfield, had an epic with smokin bert....a better resume, a better, more proven fighter....a lot of the ike hype is based on what ifs..... question...would tua have beat prime mercer???....
