My friend is new to boxing and is beginning to get interested in betting on the matches. He thinks that consistently betting on the favorite is a good strategy, as the favorite wins somewhere around 70% of the time. I tried to explain to him by betting on the favorite only, he's is risking everything to gain little, one bad pick would wipe-out his gains. However, I could not offer an alternative strategy. I have been watching boxing forever, but have gambled very little.

Hopefully, this thread will provide everyone with the opportunity to share their ideas and maybe develop a good strategy for betting on fights.

    Thoughts?

Are you looking for more of a strategy than 'bet on fighters when the odds offered are better than your perception of their chances'?

    anything else is ******ed.

One of my strategies is to find a good fighter than i know well but that is relatively unknown who is facing a known fighter who is coming off an impressive win with little substance.

Also i check the odds when the fight is announced, sometimes you can tell which way the odds are gonna skew

I got 2/5 odds on Pacquiao vs Diaz, try to find that now

    Which leads to the question:

How are you evaluating their chances?

If you can't play out styles clashes in your mind, you aren't likely to be a great picker of fights. Maybe your friend should stick around the sport, watch and learn, before putting his hard earnt money down

Being a good fight picker is the only strategy!

Do you only pick underdogs when you expect an upset?

if you bet favorites every time you will lose your money. Bookies are not idiots.

I pick an underdog if I genuinely think he'll win the fight. I'm not much of an odds studier, or someone that worries about betting patterns. They don't win boxing matches.

The most important thing is to have a good technical knowledge of the sport. It is worth your friend signing up to one of the prediction leagues here, and putting himself to the test first. Or at least recording his own picks, and seeing if he's actually likely to win any money

If you pick the favourite everytime I guarentee he ends up with little profit at the end of the year, because he'd have to bet winnings to earn anything significant and eventually luck always runs out.
