Between George foreman and sonny liston who would do better against today's heavyweights

Young Foreman at 230, with a training working on his shortcomings, fits perfectly into the modern HW era. He might not make the same impact going up, but he will do very fine.

Liston fought CWs 20 pound lighter than him and rarely proved modern HW credentials. Patterson had his hands full in todays CW.

 

I'd prefer to use Ali for both Foreman & Liston. Because Liston did NOT adapt neither did Foreman adapt to Ali. Not saying either couldn't adapt to today's fighters, rather both have shown the bouts they lost, there was little to no adaptation.

I've mentioned Williams vs Liston on this board a lot as a very under rated HW fight. But I disagree on how he won, Liston didn't adapt, rather he wore Williams down. Dude was huffin puffin & bleeding. And I thought he was too strong for Machen.

I think Liston’s jab and arm length would serve him better in today’s climate than Foreman’s mauling style. George’s technique relied too much on physicality and that wouldn’t work as well against a division full of heavies start at 6’6” and 240 lbs

 

so liston having slow punches that are easy to read and uses them in a basic come forward would work I agree

They’d both be champion today…I suppose Liston would have an easier time of it only because Fury style might bother him but I don’t think Fury beats him either.

 

Foreman might have had a puncher’s chance against Usyk but I can’t see any reason to favor him against Fury. I can’t see Liston beating him either. At 6’9” 270 lbs Fury would have a colossal physical advantage over both those men who relied too heavily on the factors of physical size, strength and intimidation. Both also had questionable stamina and late rounds effectiveness. Especially Foreman. And given that Fury survived the artillery of Deontay wilder who hit at least as hard as those guys I don’t see his chin failing him either

 

It is a question today of size, since only a few of them have a lot of skill, but the size is what stands out.. So whomever is bigger has a better chance. Put in there a 6-5 260 pound Liston and who would beat him?

 

Not to nit pick and it might not make much of a difference in the total scheme but Fury clearly isn’t 6’9”. More like 6’7 1/2”, possibly as low as 6’7”. His reach is listed as 85 inches. There may be a few “extra”’inches also added in there for good measure but his arms do appear pretty long.

 

Foreman does well, but Liston does not last long for obvious reasons. This man will have fits fighting guys way bigger and stronger than him given he feasted exclusively on CWs. Plus he didn't have an 84 inch reach. It was about 77 inches.
