BEWARE: SENSIBLE THREAD. 2010: A big disappointment OR a period of transition?

Top thread. Boxing is on the slide and it won't change until the best in each division take each other on regularly. The problem is that the promoters are so short sighted and don't want anyone to lose their 0 - especially at domestic level...

I have to disagree with Rob Palmer to a certain extent in that I think the TV companies are to blame. Sky over here and HBO and Showtime make it too easy for the promoters to earn money from sub standard fights. Beeston's right - the TV companies are the ones that pay the money, they have all the chips, they should demand the fights the public want or they should just pay a fraction of the fees.

For example, how is James Degale earning what he's earning having fought a line of journeymen? The only way Warren can afford to pay that is cos of Sky. Which is fine when he's fighting Groves, or Smith or someone who punches back, but when he's fighting journeymen, he shouldn't be getting paid title fight cash. Yep, he's only had a relatively small number of fights, but if he's as good as he says he is...

Losing is not the big thing it's always made out to be - who cares that Pac has lost 3 times? Lost count of how many fights Hopkins has lost. Cotto's lost twice and he's still respected and earning $$$ - Castillo will be remembered for a fight he lost. It's not the end of the world. But everyone is so scared of it.

Boxing needs to take a leaf out of UFCs book and make the big fights happen on a regular basis and then we'll be back!!! :bbb

 

What about the fighters from other MMA promotions not fighting the top fighters from UFC?It's exactly the same.

Bang on list apart from Jones not being no.1, but then, Mosleys win over Oscar was huge.

 

Fair point but most of the well known MMA fighters fight in UFC and they fight each other regularly.

Point is that seem more interested in proving to be the best and are less frightened of losing / being protected by promoters.

 

Didn't Hopkins lose his first or second fight? He did ok didn't he...

Funny thing is, most fight fans don't worry if a fighter has lost one early or a close classic...it doesn't stop us watching anyone.

I'm not advocating kamikaze promotion but the prospects such as Gavin, Degale, Groves, Bellew etc need to be tested earlier and the likes of David Price, who has a lot of talent is being blatantly mismanaged and it's a shame

 

Yeah, he lost his pro debut, as did Vazquez and both Marquez brothers (I believe).

I wouldn't stop watching someone because they got beat, I'd be more inclined to carry on watching, to see how they bounce back - that's the true test of someone..... not ''how quickly can I knock over another overmatched opponent''

Fighting a stream of jokers like Price unfortunately does is more likely to make me turn the TV over and watch repeats of Eastenders or something.......

Boxing will continue to be 'in transition' until the tv networks stop putting up with shithouse mismatches and start demanding the fights we all want to see.

2010/11 could still be great...

Pac - Mayweather
Haye - Klit
Lopez - Gamboa
Donaire - Darchinyan 2
Cotto - Martinez

Domestically

Groves - Degale
Bellew - Cleverly
Gavin - Daws
Booth - Munroe

But at the current rate, I'd be happy with 2 of those taking place inside the next 12 months. Shame really

 

The fans are just as bad.

You only have to read the posts on here, with the ''this fight shouldn't happen yet'' or ''wait until they both hold world titles'' to see that.

Fans should be demanding these fights and voting with their feet - it's not that long ago we saw Benn vs Watson, Lewis vs Mason, etc for domestic titles.

I don't think Groves vs DeGale is as big as either, yet people are happy to wait.

Setanta going downhill has been **** for me. all them good fights with Cotto, Clottey, Margarito, Mosley...man them mother****as battered the **** out of each other. Calzaghe, Hopkins, Pavlik, Kesller and Froch, those tussles were good too. Pacquiao, Hatton, Floyd and DLH goin at each other.

so yeah, 2010 has been real ****.

David Haye bein a little *****, ducking the Klitschkos. A talentless bore like Fraudley being resurrected from fighting at Alexandra Palace and York Hall. Pac v Floyd ont he backburner for some more years while they both decline further form their physical peaks. It's pissin me off.

 

The last few months have been shite. I did observe the lack of notable fights in a thread a few months ago. Things can only get better and I'm sure they will. Looking foward to Warrens big show and I'm convinced that Mayweather vs Pac will eventually be made. Haye needs to sort his **** out and quick. Looking foward to Froch vs Abraham immensely!
