I know alot of folks think that Joe's gonna beat BHop (which I certainly don't agree with), but what if he pulls an upset? Where will he rank then? Will he get the props that he deserves?
I'd rank him anywhere from 20-30, probably closer to 20. A win over Calzaghe when most believe he's going to lose handily and at 43 years of age would be by far his best win and absolutely massive for his legacy.
Top 10? No... Top 50? Sure, probably already somewhere between 41 to 50. In between if wins? Well, Top 40 is probable if he can pull this one off... 25 to 30 if he wins big. If Joe wins, expect the experts to place him between 41 to 50... if he wins big and defeats (the not too dangerous in 2008 ) Jones and the pretty solid (but very far from ATG in 2008 ) Pavlik, 31 to 40 is a possibility... But it's always very subjective to rank the ATGs...
Only for people with little knowledge of boxing history. I think it would place him around 50 give or take 10 spots either way. Right now I'd say he was in the 70's and a win over Joe would push him past alot of great fighters.
So beating a 43 year old Hopkins would make Calzaghe jump from around top 100 to top 50 ATG? Sorry but can´t see your logic mate! Actually a Calzaghe win against this current version of Hopkins won´t effect his ATG rankings at all.
I really think you guys are completely disregarding the great fighters of the past when rating Bernard, Joe, Wlad and Floyd above the others. Bernard and Joe may have had 20 successful defenses and have dominated the mws and smws for 10 years but they are not on the same level of Joe Louis, Stanley Kenchel, Henry Amstrong, Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Willie Pep, Jack Jonhson, Harry Greb, Archie Moore, Emile Griffith, Marcel Cerdan, Ezzard Charles, Benny Leonard, Mickey Walker, Jimmy McLarnin, Harry Greb... At best, Hopkins beats Calzaghe and RJJ this year and gets to Top 40. Of course, Calzaghe is already the best british fighter of all time and the second best european after Cerdan.
I said Calzaghe is top 100, not #100, so he could be somewhere between 76-100 and I dont fuss about the age thing. Personally I see Calzaghe as somewhere around #90 of all time, and beating Hopkins at this point, even if he is 43, is still an All Time accomplishment. I guess it depends on how the winner actually wins. If Calzaghe dominates, that is impressive, if it's close, they would both move only a little.
Beating RJJ doesnt mean **** anymore. Hopkins is a top 10 pfp guy right now, RJJ is a top 50 pfp guy. I still think top fighters now can compete in any era.
I agree with you about Hopkins spot..... You arent even close on Calzaghe's he might be around the 200 at best, its really hard to guage on a guy who has never really distinguished himself like Calzaghe. He's consistent, but Kessler, Eubank, & Lacy as your top 3 doesnt take you to the top 100.
