Thats exactly how i see it. Joe has nothing to win here.A win over a 43 year old opponent isnt much to write home about. But for Hop it propels him that much more into immortality if he can do the unthinkable and take Joes 0. If this was fight was 5 years ago we wouldnt even be arguing the point. Hop in his late 30`s was unique. He matured liek fine wine and would have had way to much for JC.
Top 30. Maybe even better. It would be a massive win, easily the biggest of his career and I'd be enormously impressed if he can do it. It would make a complete believer out of me.
I too think todays fighters get underestimated, but I dont see Hopkins beating Leonard or Hagler at any point. Duran maybe because he was smallish at that weight, but I'd still pick Duran. Perhaps he could get a lucky KO against Hearns because Hearns could be chinny. Top 50 is around Hopkins spot if he takes down Calzaghe, top 10 is way out of Hopkins reach.
I am scared to even think what Hagler would do to Echols, I just know it wouldnt take 12 rounds. No one is saying Hopkins wouldnt be competitive, just that he'd lose.
RJJ is one of the Great names of the modern era and if Bernard wants his to stand head and shoulders above Roy's, he gat to beat him... Roy may not be a top 100 pfp guy but he has that win over Hops and that cannot be deleted, only reversed. He woud only gain by facing Roy now and if he is to beat Calzaghe. Top fighters now can be compared with other great modern era fighters more easily such as Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Tommy Hearns, Marvin Hagler, Carlos Monzon, Alexis Arguello, Julio Cesar Chavez, Pernell Whitaker, Larry Holmes... But you have to see if it is fair to compare Sugar Ray Robinson ( 202 fights, 175 wins, 108 by Kayo - 26 years as a pro since 1940) with Bernard Hopkins (48-4-1-1, former IBF-WBC-WBA champion from 1995 till 2004), or Willie Pep ( 242 fights, 230 wins - undefeated in 63 pro bouts - from 1940 till 1960) with Floyd Mayweather ( 39-0, 25 KOs, former 5 division WBC titlist - 1996 till 2008 ) or Joe Louis ( 71 fights, 68 wins, 54 by kayo from 1934 till 1951, 25 defenses of the HWT title in 11 years) with Wladimir Klitschko ( 50-3, 44 Kayos, WBO, IBF, IBO titlist from 2000 till 2008 ). No, I'm sorry, I don't think it's fair!
