This is a Zhilei Zhang appreciation thread. Zhang is the most devastating puncher I have ever seen since I followed boxing (since +- 20 years). Somehow, I feel he is still under appreciated by many boxing fans. Let's talk about his flaws. His stamina is absolutely awful. He throws / lands on average maybe 5 punches a round, and if you can survive 6 rounds with him, you'll probably win a decision since he won't throw any punches after that. He also doesn't have a visible muscle tone but is just a big guy. That been said, I don't see many other flaws. His chin is solid, he has fairly good defense and is overall a very skilled fighter. He has power in both hands and a southpaw. His straight left and short right hook are absolute bombs. He's very accurate and still has fast hands, despite being 41 years old! Everyone is talking about how Wilder has been a murderous puncher, but I think Zhang is definitely the biggest puncher of the last decade(s), which includes Wladimir Klitschko. If you have a weak chin, forget it, he will knock you out early. If you have bad defense, forget it, he will knock you out early. If you are a mover with great stamina and a great chin, you might have a chance to beat him on points. In the last 2 years, he has fought arguably 5 top 10 opponents. The first one was Hrgovic, a fight in which he dropped the Croatian early. Hrgovic has an amazing chin, but didn't know where or who he was anymore and somehow survived the fight. Due to Zhang being badly gassed, Hrgovic nicked it on points. Then ofcourse he had two fights against the Juggernaut Joyce, who had been advertised as a guy who couldn't be stopped. Zhang destroyed him twice. Every punch landed on Joyces head sounded like a cannon ball. I didn't understand why Zhang agreed to fight Parker. The Kiwi has great stamina, a very good chin and proved against Wilder that he is possibly in his prime. Zhang touched Parker twice (not even on full force), but Parker went down twice. Due to his tactics, he managed to survive and outpoint the Chinese giant. Yesterday he absolutely demolished Wilder. Wilder doesn't have a great chin, but nobody has ever done that to him. After a short right hook (which barely landed), Wilder thought that the referee hit him and didn't know where he was. The rest is history. Zhang does all of this at the age of 41. He knocks every opponent down and either stops them or lose on points. I want to see him fight as much as possible. I am 100% sure he would absolutely destroy a guy like Dubois who blocks every punch with his head. Joshua vs Zhang would be phenomenal for a September fight in Wembley but I think we can all agree AJ won't take that risk. He has a legitimate punching chance against any world class heavyweight. Not Wilder but Zhang is the most dangerous puncher from this generation. Anyway, $4 a pound.
Yeah, Zhang has enormous power, and, unlike many big punchers (Shavers, Wilder, Lewis, Ruddock, Tua) is EQUALLY dangerous with both hands
He's both very heavy handed and very accurate and quick, with great timing. That's a really weird combination. It's like someone took Valuev and mashed him up with Corrie Sanders. Seems to punch with knockout power off any punch he throws. Obviously the straight left and the right hook are his danger punches, but he also messes people up with his uppercuts and bodyshots too. I can't think of any puncher in the division as dangerous as him at the moment. He's kind of a freak.
Parker has an iron chin and Zhang knocked him down with punches that didn't even look hard, unbelievable power. Someone like Wilder will KO people with spectacular looking punches while Zhang just KOes you with punches that look like they don't have much on them. I can't imagine how ****ing powerful a fully wound up straight left from him must be
He’s got the weird quality that Foreman had to his punches. He’ll throw something that doesn’t look like much of anything, or only land a glancing blow, then the guy drops like a sack of rocks. But god is his stamina awful. It’s his single biggest problem. Stops him from throwing more, and means that pretty much the only way he can win is via stoppage in the first half. I get that he’s 280lbs, but Fury never had stamina issues like that.
IMO if Usyk beats Fury again which I think he will Zhang is next, Zhang would be a huge name on his already glowing resume, be giving up 60 pounds and Zhang can bang.
I bet Fury would have those same gas tank issues at 41. Sad that Zhang took so long to crossover into elite HW action.
If he threw 50-60 punches a round for 12 rounds he genuinely could be the best HW ever. With such an output, only a handful would outbox him and he would wear 90% of people who could outbox him down inside the distance.
Meh, he's 41 years old and sure, he has good power but he's being completely overrated. He's only really knocked out the guys he'd be expected to knockout. He had Parker down twice yet Parker still won. If George Foreman had Parker down a second time, Parker would still be in a coma. He KO'd a washed Wilder. That's not any great achievement. And Joe Joyce literally stood in front of Zhang and provided target practice. Twice. Again, those are KO's you would expect Zhang to get. Sure, he's powerful but he is nothing out of the ordinary.
Foreman and Holmes managed 12rd fights without issue much older than 41. foreman went 12 hard rounds with Briggs at age 48. Holmes went 12 rounds with Nielsen at age 49, then 10 rounds with Butterbean at age 52. No stamina issues in these fights. If Fury keeps going, he won’t have any either. Whatever other issues he’s got going, he’s got his conditioning down.
