    something something black fighters something.

I dunno. Jack was pretty good up close, hard for me to see him losing to any come forward fighter or head to head warrior with the exception of Tyson really who i think had the combination of speed and power to compete. And he was pretty good at overcoming weight advantages as well. That said I think Bowe has equivalent or perhaps better inside skills. I think it's distinctly possible Jack could put his lights out up close as he managed to to more than a few times. I'd say it's a 50-50 Jack KO or Bowe UD.

Bowe would be too big and KO Dempsey as he gets reckless or exchanges. Bowe unlike those other SHWs Dempsey faced is technically very good at inside and mid range where Dempsey would take the fight and is quick for his size. His chin is iron against the cruserweights plus he would easily back up smaller men, once you back up and go backwards you lose your power, so another disadvantage for the smaller man. Dempsey could punch himself out hammering Bowe the way Hide did and Bowe would soak it up and eventually walk him down, although Hide is more mobile/defensive so it would probably just be a flat out exchange. Bowe could be outboxed but come forward smaller fighters are his meat and potato dish of the day

i agree with a lot of this and can't help feeling that bowe's inside uppercut would find dempsey enough times to deter exchanges in close

    I think Bowe stops him.

The uppercut was what I was thinking of, it's the smaller pressure fighter/swarmer's kryptonite

I'm assuming when someone says Iron against cruiserweights they're talking about Holyfield and Hide. Clear, clear gap in knockout potential between Dempsey and those two. How does it follow that Holyfield could stun and stop Bowe's assault but Dempsey's power would be ineffectual? Hmmmm. Bowe may have been good against come forward fighters, but so was Jack. That was his bread and butter. As for Jorodz, when did we ever see Dempsey put on his bike or deterred from exchanging blows? Perhaps he might have done some darting in and out with Willard initially but that's what he tried to do with every fight we have on film. Lacking in the ring generalship and technique to hunt down a truly elusive opponent, but this fight isn't about that in the slightest. It's about a nose to nose grinder, which I don't really think you can say he disliked in any sense.

I can certainly see Dempsey hitting the canvas in this with a big overhead right though. Never down for the count.

fair post and we never saw dempsey dettered true. but we never saw dempsey in the ring with a huge, athletic in-fighter like bowe. competiting against someone like big baddy would set a new precedent as an opponent and perhaps a new precedent in dempsey's own strategy. i don't doubt dempsey's will or skill but i think he would take some of those huge uppercuts diving/crouching in and would think twice about doing so again

The world's shortest primes award goes to:

    Jeff Lacy.
    Riddick Bowe
    Gerald McClellan.

    .... yeah right.

I think the opposite. That he would take them, get hurt, possibly go down, and get up raging. Which is what he usually did when he got hurt.

that's certainly possible. he did that with firpo and it worked out pretty well. and he absolutely wrecked fred fulton.

while i think this is a different calibre of big man, dempsey has given us no indication, EVER of backing down. whether he wins or losses, it stands to reason he wouldn't step off the gas

Well his chin was proven against everyone. There is also Cooper who many are on record as calling the biggest puncher of the 90s and look at the punishment he took from Golota. I'm not convinced it would hold out against every puncher but I do think it holds out against Dempsey. Dempsey's KOs of Willard and Firpo needed 100s of punches, he wouldn't connect that many against a superior big man. Bowe simply takes Dempsey's punches more easily than vice versa.

Hide you're underrating in terms of power, he scored 25 out of 26 KOs coming into the Bowe fight, 43 KOs out of 49 wins after that, certainly scoring more KOs against 200+ men than Dempsey managed, Bowe described him as the biggest puncher he faced. People who say Holyfield doesn't hit as hard as Dempsey maybe right, but as puncher he is underrated if you look at him at cruserweight he was absolutely a puncher as he was against Tyson, Dokes and Cooper

Except for when he got knocked out

    :thumbsup
No fighter whoever lived could "soak " the landed attack of Jack Dempsey
at his best 1919-23.Bowe would be too slow for Dempsey of Toledo.Do U honestly think that Bowe [a better fighter than Willard],could absorb such a beating as Willard took for 3 rounds ? If Dempsey at his best, would ever been beaten I believe a Joe Louis, Ali, Mike Tyson would have the best chance to beat the rough and tough Manassa Mauler. Louis because of his
unparalleled hitting power and handspeed, Ali, because of his wheels, and young Mike Tyson who could knock down a building with left-right uppercuts. But I still pick Dempsey, because of his Duran like speed, and power. I'm glad you agree with me PP.:thumbsup
