Better fighters don't get by 100s of punches like Willard got hit by Burt, Willard was 37, hadn't fought for 3years and was never a very skilled fighter. I think Bowe has a better chin than Willard, but more importantly, fast counter punches and a good inside punches that he would hit Dempsey just as much as Dempsey hit him. So I think Bowe wins the battle of wills (no pun intended ) Just my opinion:good
Dempsey by brutal KO. Those of you who know alot about Dempsey no why I dont need to explain things further.
PP, You forget this very important fact ! Today Jess Willard would have been TKO'D in the very FIRST round, after Jess was floored for the 3rd time.He was floored SEVEN times in the first round. Why PP do you overlook this obvious fact ? Most kos are when the referee stops the bout before, or AFTER the third knockdown. Say what you want about Jess Willard, but he was an ox who Jack Johnson unloaded everything he had on big Willard for TWENTY FIVE rounds in the broiling sun of Havana, and never even staggered Willard, who incidentally was NEVER on the floor til the 183 pound Jack Dempsey massacred him in Toledo,1919. NEVER on the canvass prior to that fight with the savage punching Dempsey. Conversely Joe Louis hit lumbering Abe Simon with his full arsenal of deadly punches before the referee STOPPED the bout in the thiteenth round in 1941.So, do you PP penalize Joe Louis as an underated puncher if he blasted big Abe Simon for 13 rounds before the referee stopped the bout ? What have you and other naysayers of Jack Dempsey, have against his legacy by holding him to an unfair standard, whilst others get a free pass. Ali hit Frazier with dozens and dozens of blows right on the button, and couldn't drop Frazier. Louis hit Abe Simon with tremendous, hooks ,crosses, and uppercuts for 13 rounds, and big Abe was still standing. This is the sole reason I constantly defend the legacy of Jack Dempsey, whom his contemporaries thought so highly of ,whilst today his memory is being tarnished by some posters, for some reason only Sigmund Freud could figure out. Give the man his due,as I give Ali, and Louis, and Frazier, and Tyson their due...Cheers....
Perhaps it would get stopped in the first, but not all fights have the 3 KD rule today and Willard likely doesn't go down 7 times if Dempsey goes to the neutral corner. This isn't the fact that Dempsey took so many punches to stop Willard, it's that he wouldn't have the power or be able to land enough punches to stop Bowe. It's the fact Bowe is the more durable of the 2, stronger, rangier, great in fighter and possibly the boxing equal
Yes P, you just read about his being a "draft dodger" on ESB a few days ago.Goodie, goodie ,another bow[forgive the pun] in your HATE Dempsey arsenal. I can't deal with haters like you anymore .Good day sir ! Life is too short .
Killing fight. Condition, chin and toughness would be the telling factors. Bowe's size comes into play on account of the first, for both of them. Bowe's habit of letting his man inside when he's tired banking on his own skill would backfire badly here. But how big is his lead at that point and can Dempsey put him away? What about Dempsey? The beating Tunney gave him nearly had Dempsey out...I'm not sure I see him suffering that kind of pressure against the bigger, bigger hitting Bowe. So Dempsey needs, in my opinion, to "take over" before the 7th or maybe 8th is up...that means Bowe letting him close consistently and (I think) losing out on the exchanges. Dempsey then needs to chip away at Bowe's lead, every round lost a total disaster. It couldn't be worse really. Probably both are going to get really badly hurt. If I had to had to pick I'd go for Bowe on points over 12, Bowe by stoppage over 15, but literally anything is possible, and Dempsey could defo win.
Simple question burt... How come you are disgusted with and shun Ali's draft dodging, but not Dempsey's?
Mc,why when Dempsey's name is part of a Fantasy Bout, his bout with Gene Tunney ,is cited as an example of the prime Jack Dempsey ? You know as well as I do,that this slow moving Dempsey at 32 years of age,out of the ring for THREE years, and without a couple of tune-up bouts, was a mere shell of his panther-like prime. Mc you of all people, surely know that obvious fact. Would you cite the Joe Louis of the Charles,Walcott, Marciano fight as the true Brown Bomber when comparing Louis to other great heavyweights ? Of course not. Would you cite Harry Wills,of the Sharkey, Uzcudun fights,as the Harry Wills of the Langford,McVey era. I think not. Or would you cite your favorite Ali, on the basis of the Spinks, Holmes or Berbick fights, when comparing him to other in their prime heavyweights? HELL NO. But the displeasure with a man who fought EIGHTY FIVE years ago, is so great that to DIMINISH his greatness, posters with an agenda, that know full well that the Dempsey of the Tunney fight, was truly a slow shell of his great prime. There was full blown racial bigotry in boxing, and I was a witness to that scurrulous era, and now there is sheer bigotry when the name Jack Dempsey comes up. Any impartial observer can see that. Have a good day, and regards from the Mauler...:hi:
It is perfectly, perfectly reasonable to draw certain deductions based upon past-prime performances. Dempsey took a hellacious beating. I learned something from that, I learned about his durability. I learned about Louis's durability when he meant Rocky, Ali's durability against Frazier III, Tyson's durability against Lewis, it's not hard, it's very simple.
playing devil's advocate burt, not everyone who criticizes dempsey has an agenda. there is a notable backlash to dempsey on the forum and the tunney fight isn't indicative of his prime BUT saying that he may lose to a significantly larger, highly skilled, hard hitting opponent isn't blaphemy. it's justified and dempsey is not immune to the same conjecture that other greats suffer. some fantasy fights people say dempsey wins, others he loses but to call all knocks against him an agenda is taking it a bit far imo
That's actually an outrageous post Burt. I don't much care for "my favourite" Ali, and I'm not a bigot that's ridiculous.
Because Dempsey didn't seve because of his supporting his dependants. If he had to go, he WOULD have as others like him didn't serve, but would have. But your idol REFUSED to serve when he was drafted, R-E-F-U-S-E-D. What got Dempsey in trouble was a snapshot of him in work clothes and Patent leather shoes in a armament factory..A world of difference, but not to U, I'm sure...
J, with all due respect, you missed the point I attempted to make. The POINT, is not that Riddick Bowe or, Joe Louis or Ali, nor any top heavyweght supporter who claims that their guy would lick Dempsey. They have their opinion, just as valid as mine...But when they slyly bring up the 32 year old shot Dempsey of the TUNNEY fight when comparing Dempsey with their favorites, is as they deep down know,is to put Jack Dempsey in an unfair comparison, and that to me is what i meant as an agenda. And NOT,that a poster thinking that a Riddick Bowe, might have beaten Dempsey. Anything is possible J, but be fair about it, I say. Hope I made myself clearer ? P.S. When I compare fighters of the past, against each other, I mean them to both be in their boxing primes. Am I wrong ?
Yet you slyly bring up the 37 year old, completely shot, 3 years inactive Jess Willard as an unfair comparison, is that to you an agenda also?
