the output, the coordination and the fluidity are AMAZING for a man his size. i think the 40 pounds of SOLID muscle will do him well on the inside as well. dempsey is a very fit, small heavyweight. bowe (prime bowe) was a very fit, LARGE heavyweight. his power, combinations and accuracy were tremendous in his prime and with obvious physical advantages it would be silly to write him off on the basis that dempsey is simply "greater"
Burt I'd also like to add that unlike most of the Dempsey haters here Ive read every single book on Dempsey out there, every article I could find. I know that men like Sam Langford who is loved on this forum called Dempsey the best HW he ever saw.So I tend to believe men like Langford,Schmeling ,Sharkey and Arcel who all said Dempsey was the greatest HW they ever saw.I would also like to add after doing all the research on Dempsey I came away liking him even more. A great man and a great fighter.
J,so you are implying that Dempsey lost to Fat Willie Meehan in 4 rounds, therefore reinforcing your less than enthusiastic support for Dempsey ,who was just coming into his prime in 1918. Well J there was a fair to middlin heavyweight who also lost a 4 round decision to Willie Meehan also, about that time. His name was Sam Langford.! Nuff said....
Difficult to pick could anyone who gets hit as often as Bowe beat a guy as accurate, powerful and aggressive as Dempesy not to mention he is one of the best finishers ever at heavyweight. On the other side Bowe has a solid 40+lbs on Dempsey was a very skilled in fighter had a lot of power very durable and had a good jab when he used it in addition to having Futch in his corner. I go with Bowe late stoppage although he'd probably take more punishment.
true true, meehan beat many good/great fighters (gunboat smith as well i believe). he was great at what he did. but the fact the dempsey consistently couldn't figure this man out, despite being such a terror in the early rounds himself, warrants a little scrutiny. i agree though with you that meehan is brought up too much (i'm guilty of this myself) and that the argument of "if he couldn't beat meehan he couldn't beat (insert name)" holds little water i really do applaud your dedication to dempsey and at times he does get attacked on here. some of it justified, some of it not
Ah, good question. How about ....... Luis Firpo v Bert Cooper Chuck Wiggins v Dwight Qawi Battling Siki v Dennis Andries
J, Virtually no one could figure out a Willie Meehan in 4 rds,as his record proves it took my Favorite heavyweight 13 rounds to "figure" out Bill Conn. It took Joe Louis 21 rounds to "figure" out Bob Pastor. It took Joe Louis 23 rounds to "figure" out Arturo Godoy. All this is hyperbole, meaning nothing. What is important who wins the fight in regular 10-12-15 rounds. Meehan was a roly poly mauler who hit, clutched, mauled inside for 4 rounds or so. In his prime years he wasnt kod, but no one considered him a threat to the top heavyweights in the regular distance bouts...Cheers...
It should be pointed out that in the last Meehan-Dempsey fight (the only one where Dempsey was rated #1 contender to Willard), Dempsey did actually have Meehan down and in all sorts of serious trouble in one of the rounds, but was outboxed clearly in the other 3 rounds, though not hurt. In all honesty, I can't view such a fight as a particularly bad result. Not good, but not awful.
I totally agree with you, A prime Jack Dempsey was terror in the ring. Bowe would be better off facing a hungry tiger. Seriously though, I too have read every book on Jack Dempsey and I just do not see this ATG losing.
i have not the experience or knowledge of dempsey that you guys do and i admire it. however, writers can have a way of glorifying and deifying their idols and contemporaries. books on john sullivan will show the same reverance and love as those for ali. i think that perspective factors a great deal in analyzing a fighter and more concrete methods such as film and record have to play a big factor. based on the limited film we have on dempsey and his record, certain critiques can be made.
