It was made live. It ends when I leave Khan's changing room at about 11:45pm. If by 'pointless talk' you mean the doctor talking me through the stitches he is putting in McCloskey's cut then you are right! Have you heard that before? A doctor talking as he puts the stitches in? There is Richard Towers on his life in a cell, Phillipe Fondu on his Iron Curtain business - it's the stuff that nobody writes about, the small details in the build to a fight. SKY need to do something similar in the build to DeGale/Groves and Haye. Adios and enjoy - it's on again, I think.
I was dubious - and, to be honest, didn't fancy this at all. I thought it would just rehash the same old boring arguments about a total non-event. I only put it on in the background... Glad I did though. It had some interesting insights into the life of a prize fighter. It really was access all areas and gave fascinating little titbits as both fighters and their teams seemed really open. Plus, the Towers and Fondu bits were fantastic niche interest items that managed to get sneaked into the mainstream. Pleased with that. All in all, if it is on again, I'd recommend anyone to listen to it. It isn't just should they have stopped it/did he have a master plan etc. It rather presented something of the reality of preparing for a big fight and dealing with the aftermath. And, Shirley, that's of interest to all of us? Top show in the end. It would be lovely if Sky did for DeGale/Groves...but regardless, Buncey, how about petitioning to get another similar show made with the two of them on the radio? There IS another Bank Holiday at the end of May which may need more pre-records to fill after all...
I'm guessing you didn't actually listen to the show? It really didn't dwell on who was right and Bunce pretty much asked and answered your three questions as straightforwardly as you did. Case opened and closed. The bit about the doctor was interesting because it allowed the public access to a private moment into the aftermath of a big fight. It's something we don't usually get to see and, as such, should appeal to boxing fans in a general sense. Try to look beyond the individual fighters. It wasn't important that this was a whiney bad loser who had ****ed his big shot by not showing up after an incredibly dull fight. It was about experiencing those moments after a world title fight. If that doesn't turn you on, so be it but maybe you don't like boxing that much? Now, I don't actually believe for one minute so maybe you need to try and be a bit more open minded and take the show for what it was - a glimpse at what goes on around a major fight not a wankfest about Kahn or McCloskey. And you must know that to bring Ortiz or Lopez into it is a load of bollocks. How on earth would you get a whole show commissioned at a good time on mainstream British radio on those guys? They might be more interesting stories that you and I would prefer to hear but nobody in the real world gives a ****.
A very good listen. The Towers stuff was really good, Buffer was brilliant as always and that Steve Lillis bloke was both funny and a straightalker. Was interesting that Buncey seemed to be asking a few people whether Khan was a global superstar or not. I think he could be at some point in the future if he becomes a multi weight champion like Pacman but at the moment he is just a bigname in Britain and a rising star in America.
Boxing Freak...how many British papers mentioned Ortiz? I did ask Haitian radio if they wanted me to take a look at the Berto fight and as for Ortiz, who cares? The kid quit in a fight, fact...you want an hour on a kid that quit because the punches hurt?...Get real, Ortiz and Berto sold about 20 percent of the tickets that Khan sold (fact)... And George is right...you clearly never listened to the show. Why would a so-called BoxingFreak knock a show that delivered an hour of behind-the-scenes boxing into homes all over the country? I don't get that. If people didn't like it, that is fine...but Boxing Freak you are clearly not big enough to stand up and say..."Ergh, perhaps I should have listened before opening my mouth." It's on tonight at 8pm on Five Live. Enjoy. Adios.
I tried the Puerto Rican station for Lopez...no luck! How odd! Khan...18,000 people, 70,000 sales and an hour on BBC Five Live a week after the fight...Ortiz and 90 percent of the boxing world would kill for that much exposure...remember, Maidana v Morales just over 7,000 crowd at the MGM in Las Vegas. Go figure. Adios.
Is this available on the iPlayer, I missed it. It is the type of thing that the PPV channel should have done....
Ouch! I'm not sure how many wrongs there are in Boxing Freaks replies...too many. El Freak, stick with your YouTube fascination. I live in the real world, a world of boxing on a Saturday night on SKY, a world with packed amateur clubs and a world a long, long way from loving obscure foreign fighters from the safety of the suburbs. Now, pop in a dvd of Lopez winning, turn the lights down, get the aero out, pour a fanta and enjoy yourself. Adios.
