OK, Ireland's big star Dunne was stopped and honestly looked finished as a fighter. This, not long after such a great win over Cordoba. So what will fill the void - Lee? Duddy? While Lee was disappointingly stopped by Vera, I think he has developed a nice, sharp style of long range boxing. He'll never be an infighter but I think he could do well in a way that Wlad K does at heavy, if he can use size and reach to avoid getting KO'd. What about the 2 Brits Jamie Moore and Matthew Macklin, both of whom also qualify as Irish? Perhaps they could be fighting in bigger venues if they landed a Duddy or Lee? What would it take for Duddy and Lee to fight them - a European title, which both Moore and Macklin have. Or would it take a world title to make it happen? Obviously, Moore looks close to a WBC shot, if he can keep his razor sharp form. And Macklin has won British and European belts in successive fights - could he pick up a world title next, from someone like Sylvester?
Dunne isn't finished and you missed out probably the best irish fighter or somewhere there abouts in McCloskey also Lindsay is still there.
lee looks like he has a good chin ....think hell do big things. dean byrne is being trained by roach looks very impressive roach says hell win world title maybe bernard dunne can come back and make some noise at featherweight looked a bit drained in his last fight matthew macklin would destroy sylvester and is supposed to be defendin his belt in dublin in december. paul mcloskey could maybe pick up a strap at light welter martin lindsay could do the same at featherweight in the next year or 2 pajo hyland could do the same needs to start gettin some proper tests though duddy will always provide value for money would love t see him in with mcklin and lee and moore but dont see them fights happenin untill any of them picks up a paper title still plenty of boxers left to fill the void and and a shed load of talented rookies and amatuers coming through ... future is bright for irish boxing
i think dunne might well be finished. will he comeback as a featherweight? or perhaps is he just done completely? it was an alarming collapse vs poonsawat. i think there will be a void and that there could be some great fights in the 154-160-pound region. i rate moore and macklin very highly and reckon they can really bring something to the table, to attract a big fight in ireland. perhaps making the transition from the british small halls to a big irish stadium.
Any of those fighters so far named could get fight fans flocking to see them if they are promoted right. For years fighting in the south of Ireland has been slim. Once Dunne came back home it has taken off and is huge I think there will be more big nights if it is done right. Dunne will come back how far he will go is another thing.
dunne wont be a world champ again....and no harm...he still has european level to campaign at...and theres an awful lot of pro boxers would love to get to euro level... you dont have to be a world champ to be a success....british level and above is a huge huge achievement for any pro boxer.
When you cave in like Dunne did, it's always a worry and I think you have to at least consider that he might pack it in. At the very lest, I think he is through in terms of big fights. What a shame he and Vazquez couldn't work out a deal in time, for a featherweight clash. Both have lost their lustre now. By big fights I mean Dunne-Cordoba-like fights. I really think if some of the guys around middleweight got together at the right time, there could be some awesome action. My personal opinion is that it would hinge on Macklin winning IBF middleweight title, and Moore winning WBC light middle title. Them vs Lee or Duddy would be amazing. I would be well excited if anything like that happened. Just imagine if Moore won a WBC title and beat someone like Duddy, and if Macklin won the IBF strap and defended successfully vs Lee. Could Moore vs Macklin 2 happen, a sequel to an amazing fight, in really big Irish battle? I know, this relies on a lot of things to go right, and could be abit far fetched. But you never know, if the reward is right for the fighters...
here is my P4P list from a few months ago - needs updating but its still pretty much alright. This content is protected
Well a weight drained fighter like Dunne who should be fighting at feather or even super feather against a heavy hitter like Poonsawat will always spell disaster, there was nothing particularly alarming about it, the Thai was just too strong for Dunne at that weight. Dunne could come back if he wanted to, there are plenty of options for him at higher weights. If Martin Lindsay was to pick up the European title for instace, Dunne V Lindsay for the EBU belt would be a huge fight over here. Paul McCloskey wants a shot at Khans title, that would make for a very interesting fight :yep Duddy, Macklin and Lee could square off down the road if one of them won a world title. Martin Rogan V Tyson Fury could be an interesting match up when Rogie reclaims his Commonwealth title. There are so many possibilies for future fights, even if Dunne did decide to retire there are plenty of exciting fighters waiting in the wings.
Don't think Poonsawat is a heavy hitter. I agree that Dunne looks too thin to be a super bantam. What big fights are going to happen on Nov 6? Are they really big? I can't get on BoxRec schedule. I love Boxrec, but why the eff does it take me to the shop, every time I try to click on something? Methinks Lee will get lined up as the next star of irish boxing, and that in order to get a big fight over there vs Lee, the likes of Macklin would have to bring something big, making it a bigger event, and worth more money. So ia m hoping for Macklin to get this fight with IBF champ Sylvester. What a great contrast of styles that would be, the uprigth amateur stylist Lee vs the compact pro Macklin. That is what I would call a BIG fight, 2 talented fighters, who together could perhaps fill up a good sized arena. I fyou look at Macklin, terrific fighter, crowd pleasing, whether it be in Manchester, Birmingham, Ireland. Seems mostly to have had "trade fights" and small hall bouts, so it would be interesting to see if something big could happen with Lee - down the line.
