Sorry to break this to you, but Foreman's win over a shot Cooney is next to worthless. Certainly nowhere near as good a win as Wlad's against old Mercer.
How do you figure? Mercer was all but done at 41. His last name opponent before facing Wlad was 6 years earlier. Klitschko had everything in his favor, height, reach, and weight advantage. Not to mention 15 years in age. Experience to Mercer, but that is a moot point especially when you're already washed up.
Klitschko stops him. The difference in footwork is immense. Foreman was a lumbering oaf compared to the Ukrainian heavyweights. People forget that boxing wasn't really a global sport in the 1970's - 1990's. Golden era heavyweights will forever be overrated, especially h2h against modern greats. It's like comparing baseball legends before they allowed everyone to play. Were they great players? Sure. Was the whole story told? Probably not.
Imo Wlad under Steward's guide is one the few guys who can knock down and out both young and old Foreman. I think Wlad's straight right hands are more powerful than Lyle's, Morrison's and Holyfield's hooks.
Cooney hadn't been anything for almost a decade prior to the foreman fight. In eight years following getting stopped by Holmes, he beat three absolute bums and got tko'd by Micheal Spinks. If you seriously think Mercer wasn't better than Cooney at the time of the fights in wquestion, you are beyond help. Mercer was flat out better than Cooney at every stage of their individual careers.
Golden era HW ATG fighters are there on film for us all to see & compare with today's HWs. How do you figure they're overrated? The supporters of both old & new fighters seem about equal to me. I tend to favor the older guys, while trying to be as non biased as I can. There's a reason it's called the golden age of HWs. When I watch them, they look better to me than what's around now. They may not be as big & strong and may not have advanced sport science like today, but they were better fighters. Klitschko could never KO Foreman! How would he find the time to punch with all that frantic clutching going on?
Wlad looked fragile against every aggressive puncher in his career. Foreman was better than all those punchers including Joshua. I always picked Foreman in this fight.
Wlad had more power, more speed, more skill, more size, and better ring movement Forman could take a shot, so I think Vlad would win by stoppage
A word on Shannon Briggs: Foreman would have KO'ed the version of Shannon Briggs who fought Vitaly. Briggs who was completely washed and old went the distance against Vitaly. Against the younger prime version of Briggs, old Foreman was capable to apply constant pressure and he got a lost by majority decision. I think Big George and prime Vitaly are not very far from each other in terms of dominance at their peak. As for Wladimir, he just can't be in the same ring as George. Too much pressure. Not a good matchup for him.
