historically the old saying the bigger they are the harder they fall. The exceptions to this rule have been Vitali and Valuev (however Valuev fought older guys and few real aggressive punchers) he was staggered badly by Haye but David didn't push in the last rd. We have guy now that are 6-8 and 6'9 but are the chins getting better or bigger. Today battle kind of made me wonder again https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtRs4jTR_k4 What are your thoughts going back till present on the bigger men and there chins in comparison to the smaller men of their respective era's starting with Willard until now
Yeah, the bout with LL was grisly due to the blood shed by VK but he imoressed me no end by taking everything from Lewis...everything....and he recovered real well vs Sanders..
James J. Beattie was a heavyweight in the 1960s. He was 6' 9" and was a prospect for a while. Before he fought in New York, they weren't sure if they were going to issue him a license because at the time they thought it was unhealthy for someone so tall to box. Physicians were worried he might have a heart attack or something. (Sort of the same idea behind not letting women run marathons until the 1980s.) Against better competition, Beattie would usually run out of gas and get knocked out. He didn't help the cause for tall guys very much.
when he was younger, he did not fight the punchers but the Lyle fight tarnishes anything legendary because the Ref could have been justified to stop the fight in Lyle's favor several times and while Lyle may have been the best puncher Foreman faced up until that point, Lyle was not an elite puncher. Foreman was KO'd by Ali and dropped by Jimmy Young but as he got older George II, he learned from Archie Moore how to roll better and pace himself
most small guys have bad chins, most big guys have bad chins, having a iron chin is rare BIG or SMALL :good how many people sign up to be a boxer and get punched in the chin? Why so few? Because getting punched in the chin isn't easy :good there is no RULE saying big guys don't have iron chins, just like with smaller guys only a RARE few have them :bbb
I agree with Latineg, size doesn't have anything to do with it. 'Chin' is a mystery, how some have it and some don't. Conditioning plays some part, but not all of it. I think some guys essentially panic when hit and others don't, which is another contributing factor.
Jess Willard seemed to have a good chin. Primo Carnera's chin was suspect but he did well to pick himself up from the floor well for a huge man. Abe Simon looked like he could take a punch.
I disagree about Lyle. He was a massive puncher who caught an inactive George with massive shots. Any of those bombs would have flattened many guys. They were of the same variety that caused LL's loses. Foreman did well to survive them. He also walked thru Fraziers shots. The Ali KO and the Young KD were pure exhaustion. Ali hit him dozens of times flush in the early rounds and George walked thru them. That being said, he did learn to roll later but really surprised me with the bombs he took from Holyfield, ****ey, Morrison later on.
