I am sympathetic with that argumet up to a point.

Some guys will never look totaly ripped however hard they train due to genetics.

However I don't think that there is any excuse for a world class fighter coming into the ring with the physical conditioning of a Sam Peter, Ruslan Chagaev or Sultan Ibragimov.

That is just laziness and poor profesionalism. I could find a man at my local pub who looks better with his shirt off.

Incidentaly I have serious issues with people being critical of fighters from the comfort of their armchair knowing that they will never have to take a punch from a profesional boxer.

On the other hand I worked at a high end running shop to pay my way through university and I ran 4 miles several days each week just so that I could know what I was talking about. I only got the natinal minimum wage for it and I did not see it as my career.

It's true. when you're fat, you're not in fighting shape. I can't recall any good fat Heavyweights.

What I was trying to say was there were not too fighters that have gone the distance with Marciano and Louis in Marciano's case I know there were 6 he was 49-0 with 43 KO's.....Walcott was erratic and looked better in some fights than others but he fought a lot of punchers and survived them so I would not say he had a weak chin. Would you?

You seem like a Marciano detractor. One of his worse performances, I also believe he had the flu for the fight. Peralta went the distance against Foreman. Who's turn is it next?

    I agree!

Walcott did not have a weak chin BUT it wasn't as good as a lot of other top heavyweight Champions.

Look, I really like Walcott as well. If fact we put up a monument in Camden New Jersey of him and I was the guest speaker. His whole family was their.

Like I said, the question was "How many men went the full distance with Marciano or Louis" and I gave the answer and now everyone gets upset.

This is also the 1st time I heard he had the flu, even Marciano never stated that.

    Hhascup,

Thanks for clearing this up. Some here believe Walcott was under fed for the Simon fight. The way I see Walcott was 192 pounds, and simply got caught with a hook to the jaw.

Right, it's a figure of speech. No fighter has never had no one go the distance against them. Answering this is dumb. The performance was among Marciano's worst, and his friend attested to have having the flu (Which is why he weighed 179) and reason for being sloppy and weak. I saw it on Rocky Marciano's - A Life Story.

As for Walcott, he had a good chin, not a great one. He would have beaten tons of fighters these days. I think Walcott's chin is actually superior to Louis'. I mean, 3/6 stops came from ATG punchers and one I heard was due to being shoved out of the ring by Tiger Jack Fox.

    How?

Isn't that the question you asked?

All I am saying is that Walcott didn't have the best chin, as he was stopped 6 times during his 71 bout career. Grant you, he was stopped twice by Rocky and once by Louis. He was also stopped by Abe Simon, Al Ettore and Tiger Jack Fox, who could punch.

Your not going to tell me that he had as good a chin as Ali, Holmes, Marciano, Frazier, Dempsey and some others are you. Patterson was stopped 5 times and everybody says he had a glass jaw. Two of them were against Liston and another two were against Ali.

Walcott's chin better than Joe Louis? I dunno about that one. Walcott's chin to me is average. It wasn't tested a lot because Walcott was good on defense, and sometimes did not risk a lot in the ring.

Rocky was only 179¾ when he fought Tommy DiGiorgio on September 26, 1949 and on October 10, 1949 he weighed 180¼ when he fought his 1st bout with Lowry.

I asked How many fighters went the distance with Rocky meaning not too many...You came back with Ted Lowry 2 times. Thats nothing to be ashamed of Lowry went the full route with a lot of punchers. He was a surviver not really a winner but a great surviver. In fact Lowry was only stopped 3 times in 144 fights ( I think one was a cut) and beat and drew with a lot of hard punchers.

George Foreman went the distance with Levi Forte who was stopped in 2 rds by Chuvalo, KO'd in 3 by Dave Zyglewicz, KO'd by Floyd Patterson and Bjorn Rudi

Lennox Lewis went the full distance with Levi Billups who was KO'd in 1 by Corrie Sanders, KO'd in 2 by Jeremy Williams and Michael Moore

Why bring up 2 fight s with Lowry, you did not answer my question you are looking for a kink...or a knock....YOU Cant KO everyone but I guess you can beat everyone...Marciano did and he fought his # 1 contender 5 times and #2 once.

I was answering your question, I thought you wanted to know who went the distance with Rocky, so I told you, BUT maybe I misunderstood what you were looking for.

I met Lowry several times and I asked him about Rocky and also asked him who was the best he fought.

He said Rocky was very strong BUT Maxim was a better fighter. Go figure!

Yeah, I may be stretching there but their chins are quite comparably. I still stand by it, though. I disagree, it was Walcott who risked too often in the ring and got careless (Louis II, Marciano I, Tiger Jack Fox). He was winning most fights in which he slipped up in. Louis on the other hand was the much better technician, obviously, and could usually stay away from trouble with his superior boxing skills and awesome jab.
