Let's say the Douglas of the Tyson fight vs Tate who fought Coetzee. Quite a bit in common between these two. Both men were 6'4" and who's weight ranged all over the place. Against Coetzee Tate was 240 lbs, while Douglas scaled in at around 231 for Tyson. James was 29 years of age and Tate was 24 against Coetzee I believe. Both men were rangy boxer types who could crack when they had to and both had questionable durability. Each won some big fights and each lost to lesser men. Let's go with a 12 round limit.

Well as we have already found on here the Douglas of the Tyson fight is an indestructible being of super hero proportions . So it's not even a question worth considering

Wow, tough fight to pick! I feel more comfortable picking Douglas but Tate was no slouch.
I'm gonna go (tentatively) with Douglas but honestly for me there is very little in it.

I was going to say that Tate had trouble with big punchers, but then I thought about it: Berbick was not a big puncher. Anyway, this would be a fight between two talented but vulnerable guys and it could go either way, depending which one was 'on' at the time.

Douglas for me all the way, he was popping on all cylinders against Tyson, and I don't wanna hear any BS from the Tyson nuthuggers, about how Mike was outta shape blah- blah- blah, that's not James fault..

Douglas could have been better If he would have applied himself more..

Buster would bust him up,to quick and sharp, more polished and had that snapping jab..Douglas when on is more on the level of a tucker who is a level or two easily over Tate.

Well he was certainly more durable than Tate. But John started off fighting real opposition early. Tucker didn't.

I was referring to your statement about Tucker being a level or two over tate...not Douglas. Tucker was certainly more durable and longer lived. But John didn't spend the better part of 30-35 fights facing trial horses the way Tony did. Hell he was beating comparable or better men in just his first 12-15 bouts.

Douglas fought Tucker before he fought Tyson...it shows he is on tuckers level if in shape.I never said anything about Tate compared to Tuckers opponents or vice versa other than the level above him using Tokyo Douglas, honestly don't know if Tate fought better opposition than tucker.

You said this: Pay particular attention to the phrase in bold and in enlarged font.

Douglas when on is more on the level of a tucker who is a level or two easily over Tate.

Fought? No. Defeated? Yes. Obviously Tate never "fought" anyone as good as Mike Tyson or Lennox Lewis. The biggest win Tucker ever recorded was over Douglas and that win only went up in stock value due to Buster's eventual win over Tyson years later. But at the time he was a nobody. Tate started off fighting young hopefuls when he was just a prospect himself and in 79' beat Coetzee was one of the divisions best fighters. Tony padded his record through his first 33 or 34 bouts.
