This content is protected Sad to hear. Guy fought a lot of great fighters and even had upsets against Bert Cooper and Witherspoon.
Saw that this morning. Watched everett Martin fight more times than I can count. Used to see him on the small cable networks all the time. Being a journeyman who was taking shots from some of the hardest hitters every other month must have been hell, but no one can deny his guts. According to him the guys at the gym nicknamed him Bigfoot because Of all the hair he had on his back. Not very flattering but hey he was a good sport and went with it. Funny story. Years ago when my daughters were younger they liked that cable series “ finding Bigfoot. “ one of those stupid reality shows where these people would go out into the wilderness and claim they were looking for the legendary Sasquatch. I told my kids there really IS a Bigfoot and that he lives in Tyler Texas. Excited they were like “ really ? “. I said sure and looked up a photo of Everett Martin. They weren’t too thrilled. But I got a lot of laughs… R.I.P Everett Martin
LOL. The immortal Dad Jokes. I’ve got a million myself. The trick is: Fire them out as you would pellets from a shotgun and surely you’ll get at least one hit. Dad Jokes can also be so bad that they actually turn out to be pretty good. 58 is far too young an age to pass. Very sad. Do we know the cause? ..I might look it up. RIP.
So far I haven’t read any of the articles out there. But yes, he went too soon. Always seemed like a nice guy from the post fight interviews. Everett Martin was a build up man for a lot of prospects on the way up and a lot of greats on the comeback trail. Man probably shared a ring with more top heavyweights than anyone we can think of
Very disappointed that he didn't have literal big feet. I was expecting some sort of record like he had the largest feet in boxing, size 20 or something. RIP.
I remember him yelling “I went the distance with a legend!” after the Foreman fight. On the same broadcast the mentioned his actual “little” feet. Sad to hear this.
How many times was he on ESPN? I feel like I saw him fight every other month. RIP, champ. You were a gamer and entertained many.
Everett Martin was what I call an ‘honest prizefighter.’ Always came to fight, never shied away from any opponent no matter their record or reputation, made what certainly had to be a good living at it and earned his purses. More durability than ability. But he had the most important ability: availability. You could count on Bigfoot giving someone rounds and being ready to take advantage if the guy in the other corner (I’d say the opponent, but he was always the opponent versus the bigger name) didn’t come prepared. A man deserving of our admiration. Not everybody is a champion. But he was a true profession. RIP Bigfoot.
Tuesday Night Fights was my favorite era in boxing, and one that will never be recaptured, and Martin was a HUGE part of that, seemingly on there every other week. I told this one on the other thread, but its one of my favorites. Sean O'Grady was all upset one week because he found out Martin only wore a size ten or so, and wanted to know why they call him "Bigfoot." When he finally asked, Martin simply replied "I don't know." I laughed hysterically because I thought it was obvious it was the body hair. I also remember that one of the magazines at the time, either KO or its sister publication, did a nice article on him. It, and these threads that are popping up, are such a nice tribute to how a scrappy club fighter can affect us as fans. RIP hardy iron man. You really do have a legacy to be proud of.
Just been looking up the guys he faced. Absolutely mad. Wladimir Klitscko twice. Michael Moorer Joe Hip, Bert Cooper Witherspoon Bowe Bonecrusher Gary Mason Foreman Lamon Brewster Lance Whitaker Dwight Muhammed Qawi Johnny Du Plooy Tony Tubbs Larry Holmes Tony Tucker Damiani Herbie Hide. And probably a good few more!
I wonder about guys like him. He started out with a pretty respectable record. Then he just went on a streak of fighting name fighters one after the other. I’d forgotten he beat Witherspoon.
