In my estimation these are the two most overhyped fighters of the post-Klitschko/post-Mayweather era.

Canelo was probably the better fighter for his size but he was also rated more highly: P4P No.1 for 2.5 years, whereas Joshua (who was marketed as the next great heavyweight) didn't make the top 10 even pre-Ruiz 1.

Who was more overhyped relative to their ability?

Broner maybe. He was very good and achieved a lot but he was made out to be the 2nd coming of Mayweather.

Joshua easily is the bigger hypejob.

Canelo, no matter how much you dislike him, is inarguably one of the best Mexican fighters of all time and an ATG. I'm saying that as someone who has never been a Canelo fan and criticised him multiple times here on this forum. Yes, there are many asterisks around his resume, but it's a top-tier resume. Golovkin II, Kovalev @ 175, Saunders @ 168, aged Mosley and Cotto, yes we can pick them apart but they are good wins that will hold up historically. He fought most top contenders of his era, the only glaring omission is Benavidez.

Joshua's resume is better marketed by Eddie Hearn but is far weaker in real substance compared to Canelo's. I would really find it hard for someone to argue Joshua over Canelo from any perspective. Skill-wise, eye test, level of opposition, legacy, titles won, Canelo completely clears imo. Sure Canelo is overrated to a degree but he is a bonafide ATG. Joshua is absolutely not in the conversation in the slightest.

Say what you want about AJ but he always fought on a level playing field and never ducked anyone. You can't say the same for Canelo.

Joshua easily. He wasn't nearly as good as advertised. Canelo went to 175 and beat Kovalev who was still a champion. Kovalev was past his prime but so was most of joshuas best wins, 40 year old Pulev, 40 year old Povetkin, 40 year old Klitschko, 36 year old Takam, shot Helanius. Canelo unified 168 and beat numerous top guys

Neither. Deontay Wilder is the worst hype job.

He avoided some of the same people Joshua fought: Parker, Klitschko, Povetkin, etc.

And Canelo is no hype job. He fought many good opponents as he moved up through the weight divisions, most of whom were naturally bigger than himself.

Canelo is not a hypejob. He genuinely is a good fighter and ATG.
AJ i don't think was a hypejob. In my opinion, Joshua's resume was pretty solid and solid.

Wilder on the other hand was a genuine hypejob. I suspect Mark Brelland had something to do with it. Once he was knocked out by Fury, out of nowhere he fights better competition and starts getting exposed.

Didn't fight Fury or Wilder, got a 115-113 card over Usyk. Not exactly the people's champ. Cash cow.

    Canelo is better.
He never took a loss like the Ruiz one.

    But a lot of similarities.
Both big PED users, though AJ body builder never caught and Canelo is probably worse given all the weight jumping.
Both have stacked odds every fight.
Both ducked risky fights and picked old/jaded opponents.
AJ preferred the 40 year olds but Canelo liked the draino clauses and short notice camps for opponents.

People like to forget how Canelo dragged up Khan, aged Golovkin multiple times, drained people to zombies as far back as Fielding and tried this on others (like Smith) unless they had the leverage to stop it. Short prep time offered to Kovalev, Saunders and Plant (both of who rejected the first fight offers because of that). Callum Smith found out he got the fight on Twitter because he was left in the dark. Some of the dodgiest antics ever seen in negotiations.

Canelo performed surprisingly well against Golovkin in the second fight and that's what a lot of his legacy is built on (and not getting KO'd the first). But the problem is that those fights have an asterisk on them for two reasons, one being Golovkin's age (we know see Canelo at that age struggling to match his younger level) and the second being that he was clearly juicing. Golovkin called out needle marks in the first fight and then Canelo was literally busted for beef for the second. So it's basically proven he juiced for Golovkin and that's a big reason for his success.

It's crazy, and tbh quite rage inducing to me that genuine boxing fans can term fighters that have reached the pinnacle of the sport, and won multiple world titles, and refer to them as hypejob , or in worse cases bums (not directed at OP)

It's like if someone can't be the absolute creme de la creme, the GOAT, or 'best of the era', then they might as well not have bothered?

Considering what these warriors put their body through and the risks they take on for our entertainment, it never ceases to amaze me our collective ability to see the most negative and denigrate folks.

Neither Canelo nor Joshua have been my favourite fighters, and they have been more than adequately compensated for their efforts, but i think the terminology is totally in the wrong ballpark and in the wrong sport for these guys.

They achieved things in boxing normal fighters can only dream of, both put millions of butts on seats and got people interested in boxing - regardless of their motivation to watch - and both delivered great entertainment and fights even when losing.

Personally i'd save hypejob for boxers that are touted by the media / themselves, but achieve very little and generally disappoint in their choice of fights - and even people like Broner,Tank Davis, that might arguably fall into that category still have won world titles which other fighters cannot claim.

Overrated and UnderAchieved i feel are probably better terms with a bit more respect for the fighters who dare to gtet into the square ring for us.

But hey, it's a forum, so what the hell do I know? :risas3:

They both actually did prove themselves to be good fighters, so not sure if I'd call them hype jobs. An example of a hype job in particular would be the Charlo brothers who are hype jobs of the highest order.

AJ was incredibly marketable which flattered his ability a lot, especially in the UK, and I think thats more down to his looks to be honest. Although, Sky, Hearn and AJ collaborating together were a machine until Hearn opened up DAZN.

Hype jobs? Neither should be called it...

AJ is a 2 time heavyweight champion and a former unified champion at that with half a dozen defences under his belt.

Canelo is a multi weight world champion, twice undisputed with a career spanning from Welterweight to Light Heavyweight fight all comers.

Both have had tremendous careers but out of the two it would be AJ that has been most hyped and delivered the least.

AJ because atleast Canelo doesnt mentally folds and his chin is solid.

    both are plodding bums though

That ginger midget legit picked AJ to beat Fury head to head which shows how little that midget knows about boxing. Both got beat by superior boxers pretty quickly in their careers and nothing has changed.

The real question is how AJ managed to avoid failing any drug tests, Canelo almost did but that horse meat caught him out.

Yeah cause Wilder openly ducked him and his fight with Fury collapsed because of Deontay as well.

    Joshua by miles

He was supposed to be on par with Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko

He was supposed to be the next great heavyweight champion

Canelo exceeded expectations for the most part
