Tysons power was excellent . Shavers power was extraordinary . You see the difference ? 1. Shavers 2. Liston 3.Foreman Top 3 hardest punchers of all time .
Depends what you mean by "one punch KO". Berbick was getting hit all over the place in round 1, and floored already in round 2. He was undoubtedly groggy before the final punch landed. Johnson? The only Johnson he fought was some guy Michael Johnson. He was knocked out straight after getting up from a knockdoen, so I wouldn't call that "one punch KO". Even Tubbs rolled off those ropes like a drunk a couple of seconds before the final punch.
Meant to say Spinks not Johnson. My list was originally longer, and I wanted to eliminate the fights that weren't as relevant to Tyson's career. Generally I think a one punch KO can legitimately be called such if the fighter is still relatively unhurt beforehand, i.e. not reeling about on their feet such that the final shot is just the one that finalises the job. A true one punch knockout is very rare, though Tyson had a few of those too.
Absolutely spot on. Shavers is the biggest myth I've ever come across in boxing history. Tyson was a 220 pound bundle of fast twitch dynamite, able to blast from both hands from any angle. Not a crude right hand swipe.
Exacly right. On top of this every Tyson fight or thereabouts are readily available to see. I have little doubt there would be some frightening displays of power in some of Shavers unseen ko's. Shavers gassed fast, had average skills and not much punch resistance. Power was most of what he did actually have. He also didn't have the luxury of catching guys punch unseen very often as he just wasn't that fast or talented.
Shavers but Tyson could knock guys out at any time with 1 punch. The difference is Tyson used a lot more combinations to set up his knockouts.
I believe those would still be called "one punch knockouts". You can make your own definition if you like, I guess that's what these forums are for. Too bad facts trump opinions though. Berbick Tubbs Spinks Williams Tillman Mathis Jr. Seldon... Botha Savarese Etienne These are legit one shot bombs.
Again, we have about 8 Ernie Shavers knockouts on film. He scored 68. Keep that in mind. Just imagine only having Tysons last 8 KO's on film, compared to the 42 he scored. Would dramatically effect perceptions.
Very true. Shavers most likely had the better power but Tyson accomplished at the world level what Shavers only wishes. Quality knockouts go to Tyson, no question.
Yeah, I have Tyson just ahead of Shavers in my top 10 HW punchers of all time. Overall puncher, Tyson was better. Overall fighter, Tyson was better. But who could throw the strongest punch? Shavers.
Yeah I have to agree. There's a reason why everyone who fought both Foreman (who I feel had more power than Tyson) and Shavers said Shavers was the harder hitter. The greatest heavyweight puncher of all time would be Iron Mike followed by Foreman, in my opinion. Joe Louis would probably be next on the list. What does your heavyweight list look like?
