As simple as i can put it: who was the bigger threat, 2009 Cotto @145 or 2013 Canelo @152?

Sorry, should have made an 'equally big threat' option. You guys will have to manage like this.

Not so sure. Cotto lost to Trout who Canelo beat. Would 2009 145-pound Cotto have won that fight? Very questionable.

Cotto's best win at the time was Mosley, who was past his prime but still very good. Canelo beat Mosley when Shane was definitely more faded, but Canelo was also much more dominant over Mosley than Cotto was. Would 2013 152-pound Canelo not have beaten 2007 Mosley at least as convincingly as Cotto did?

Also, yes, Cotto was a seasoned vet when he fought Pac. But part of that 'seasoning' consisted of getting brutally beat down by Margarito and escaping with a questionable points win after going life-and-death with Clottey. Canelo hasn't had any confidence shakers like that.

Cotto was coming off of a confidence crushing loss to Margarito and a suspect showing against Clottey, but he was seasoned. Canelo is at his physical peak and his peak level of confidence. He could be the next great fighter, but he is unproven.

Cotto came down to fight Pacquiao, Floyd is going up to fight Alvarez. I'd say all things considered, its even.

Canelo is young, hungry and probably there can't be a better moment to fight him.

Cotto had been crushed by Margacheato and was ready to go to 154.

canelo's hits harder than cotto p4p and he's undefeated. cotto was already damaged when he fought pacquiao.

Agreed. Me calling it even was generous, only out of respect for Cotto and considering that Canelo is somewhat green. At best its even really... I do give the Canelo fight the edge.

For those picking Canelo as the bigger threat, do you actually believe that there is a legit chance that he can beat Mayweather? You don't see Mayweather just pot-shot his way to a UD? I don't see Alvarez winning but did feel that Cotto had a real chance of winning against Pac in 2009.

Floyd would have ko'd Cotto at 145. Cotto lacked confidence and was wobbled even dropped in several fights. It would have been an early Ko!

Floyd would have beaten Cotto, that's pretty clear.

Whereas there's a chance Canelo can beat Floyd due to a huge size advantage.

Although I'm certain it's a UD for Mayweather against Gasnelo, inactive Canelo.

2013 Canelo beats more 2013 Welterweight fighters at 152 pounds than 2009 Cotto beats 2009 Junior Welterweights at 145 pounds. I will say that.

The thread is too vague for an actual vote. The threat depends on who/when they're fighting.
