Mcall Lewis. Everyone knew Foreman had a chance to knockout the shaky chin Moorer. Noone thought Lewis would be dumb enough to try and slug with Mcall.

Lewis was still a question mark at the time. He was a top Heavyweight but Micheal Moorer in my opinion was widely expected to handle business and possibly set up a fight with Lennox Lewis.

foreman blew everyone away with an imposible win. he was coming off a 17 month layoff, was in his 40's, had also not beat a ranked contender in 2 years. Nobody gave george a chance. At the time Moorer gave holyfeild a beating and evander beat george, plus foreman wasnt even ranked. It was a gimmie that went wrong.

Against mccall, lewis was cutting his teeth as a new champ he was at least fighting a ranked contender within his own age group.

Moorer didn't need Foreman to beat him. He could've easily done that himself. With Foreman's power it was never impossible.

McCall beating Lewis took me a while to get over.

    1. Foreman fought and lost to Tommy Morrison, a chinny fighter with big power and lost.

    2. Moorer may have been chinny but there was nothing to suggest that Foreman would fare any better this go around.

    3. Lewis vs. McCall was very shocking. Tough choice though.

George's win was a bigger shocker because Moorer was winning every round and all George threw back was that jab. The knockout was almost hilarious because Moorer practically did a Ric Flair nosedive. I'll never forget the bar erupting when George won the fight.

McCall vs Lewis was more of a shock than Lewis vs Rahman though.

even though comeback foreman never knocked out an elite fighter?

Holyfeild outboxed foreman easily and Moorer outboxed holyfeild. boxing fans at the time knew that foreman used to punch decades earlier but thought "if he couldnt catch holyfeild how was an even older george going to catch moorer"? The idea at the time was foreman wasnt going to be beter than he was against holyfeild, he was even older.

It was suposed to be a farce but it was a huge upset.

Moorer was far from an elite heavyweight. His win over Holyfield was also far from impressive, in fact there were few people besides Moorer who actually thought he won the fight against a clearly injured Holyfield.

Foreman still had power and Moorer had a bad chin. It wasnt suprising that Moorer was winning the fight easily and it wasnt suprising Foreman was able to knockout Moorer, only that he was able to land the shot. It wasnt a farce.

The Foreman fight was a bit of a snoozer. Moorer was just pasting old George and I think the crowd and the announcers were kind of bored with the same thing over and over. It was a suprise to see Moorer go down from the shot. George had landed a similar right hand which Moorer took pretty well, but this one hit him on the lip and split it in half and knocked him out.
With Lewis the fight was just heating up, but Lewis was fighting a stupid fight. He was really opening himself up when he threw his punches, and this is something that Lewis had been doing for a while and noone took advantage of it.
If you watch that fight MCall didnt even have his eyes open when he threw the shot. Mcall was so limited Emanuel Steward just had him reacting to Lewis' big telegrahed right hand, by firing his own as soon as Lewis started to throw his. Mcall just punched inside of Lewis poorly executed righthand and flattened him.
Both champions made amatuerish mistakes in their losses. Moorer stood in front of George like a punching bag and Lewis went wild trying to knockout a guy who wasnt going to be knocked out.

I'm a little young, so I don't remember the buildup to Lewis vs. McCall, but was that really that big of an upset. From what I saw (only 2 rounds), but McCall looked like a better fighter that night. Am I reading too much into this, or is the upset really exaggerated?

Second fight, Lewis looked like a whole different, better fighter.

To me, Foreman-Moorer had always been a sort of 50.50 affair. I didn't see Moorer as some huge favourite. Now I don't doubt that a lot of that was to do with the shadow Foreman cast from his younger days, but to me Lewis was the really disturbing result.
