Clay-Liston was the biggest of those by far.

    Tyson-Douglas tops everything though.

Some of the odds set by the bookies are more sensible than others.

Thats true but the odds swing based on the bets that are placed. Its not totally accurate but its a pretty decent indicator of what the public opinion is.

I also think that the odds offered have become more extreme over time.

I can't see Joe Louis being made a 42-1 favourite over anybody with two hands and the odds offered on Dempseys challengers were shorter than those offered on Louis's.

Clay-Liston I suppose takes the prize, but Schmeling-Louis I is close behind...a brilliantly fought bout by Max...and as great as his strategy was, it wouldn't have been possible were it not for the German's coolness and incredible courage. This was the same Louis that was causing guys to **** in their britches on their way to the ring..Louis was so feared..and yet Schmeling was the epitome of cool...and executed the perfect fight.

Oh yeah...though it wasn't listed at the outset of the thread..like it's a foregone conclusion that it's the GREATEST upset...which it surely was.

That was the Louis who just annhilated Carnera and Baer and would go on to crush Sharkey in his next fight. Baer when asked if he knows what fear is answered: "Fear is standing in the opposite corner of Joe Louis, knowing he wants to go home early."

I'm always struck by the fear and awe Louis put into those guys..and right after the first Schmeling fight in anhillating poor Jack Sharkey...and then how Schmeling fearlessly stuck to his plan and shocked the world.
