Since this is the 2nd quarterfinal according to the schedule, that means the snooker running over caused us to miss Milan Dasic vs. Marcel Gotshalk in the opener.
ES commentators say that Mauljda was a decorated amateur, taking some regional championships (or maybe even national, had my volume low) and coming in 2nd at as many.
Round 1 Malujda is chasing after Aurieng, throwing high left jabs and big looping rights. Aurieng is using lateral footwork on the outside and downward swooping motions with his upper body to defend, and starting to line up his counter southpaw jab. Malujda keeps pressuring, looking for the big shot. Instead he is PUT ON HIS ASS by a straight left hand counter thrown by Aurieng while backing into a corner!!! Malujda gets up and is back on the attack with no time wasted. High jabs, looping rights. AGAIN Aurieng catches him with a beautiful straight left counter from the hip and buckles his legs, but Malujda doesn't go down this time. 10-8 Aurieng
Round 2 Aurieng pokes in a few right jabs dancing in on his toes, then backs out and lures Malujda to the ropes while flashing out his right hook. Aurieng keeps the left coiled, waiting to pop out a straight counter if Malujda gets too close with his face open. Instead of headhunting, Malujda reverts to a body attack from behind a tight guard, but is still plodding in. Aurieng drops some light combos on his gloves while skating around him. Aurieng is much lighter on his feet and more agile, easily the ring general and more comfortable. Malujda comes forward, guard slipping down past his mouth as he looks to flop in against Aurieng and lean for a spell. Malujda's breathing has become heavy and he's marked up around the eyes. Aurieng pops the 1-2 into his guard and reaches underneath for some taps to the body. Big body/head combo by Aurieng as Malujda pitches forward and smothers him against the ropes. 20-17 Aurieng
Round 3 Malujda runs in trying to crowd Aurieng to the ropes and is knocked back on his heels by a right jab and left uppercut. Aurieng gets away from the ropes and begins to circle and toss flurries, always finishing with the long left upper. Malujda drops his face down and rushes in, trying to thump at the body of the Frenchman and pin him to the ropes. Aurieng is too quick and smooth. A combo by Aurieng rattles off the top of Malujda's face as he comes in with a wide, low, slow swing and then attempts to hold. Double left hook jumping in by Malujda, caught in midair by Aurieng with both arms outstretched and pushed back a foot. Malujda is pushing into Aurieng and initiating clinches constantly, forcing Aurieng to wrestle his way out of corners or wait for the ref. Rabbit punch by Malujda on the inside. Aurieng pushes down on his head and takes a wild grazing shot as Malujda wings it blindly overhead. 10-9 Aurieng 30-26 Aurieng
What was the result? Did the Serb get through or the German? Whichever one, that is Aurieng's opponent in the Semis.
