By this I mean name an instance in which a fighter handpicked an opponent only to have it come back and bite him. How about Foreman/Schulz?
I remember 90s heavyweight contender Alex Garcia was offered a big payday against Foreman. He wanted to take a raincheck on that fight and take a tune up with Unheralded journeyman Mike Dixon well he got Ktfod and lost his shot at the big time, after that he became a journeyman Heavyweight and became an opponent type.
Pavlik-Hopkins (take advantage of Hopkins being old - he showed that against Calzaghe, right? ..... WRONG!) Lacy-Calzaghe (this dude from Wales is a nobody.. and easy belt... WRONG!)
De la Hoya/Sturm (minus the robbery; it still knocked some shine off the Hop match)' After the loss to Lewis and draw with Botha, Briggs was doing the journeyman circuit to get the confidence back. Loser of 3 of last 4 Sedrick Fields set him back again. Wlad/Sanders. Oops.
lol, half the fights mentioned in this thread were either mandatories or the biggest money fight available. These people seem to be missing the point of the thread. Khan-Prescott is about as good of an example that is out there. Lopez-Mtagwa seems to have backfired somewhat. Baer-Braddock is a big one historically. De la Hoya-Sturm. Hatton-Collazo.
Tyson wanted to fight Holyfield but Don King said "you're going to Tokyo and you're fighting Buster Douglas!" Tyson didn't want to be there, didn't train, and paid the price. The superfight with Holyfield never materialized because of the dollar signs King saw in another Tyson trip to Tokyo.
