Which boxers in your opinion were overhyped or showed the most promise on the amateur and Olympic circuit but never lived up to expectation? Those who showed promise in the pro ranks but didn't step up when faced with tougher opposition can be included also.
Howard Davis Mark Breland (just because of the insane hype - he had a fine career in normal terms) Audley Harrison
I remember some people thinking Taishan Dong was going to be good for some reason. I guess he's one of the physically largest.
Mark Breland would be #1 , Ray Seales#2, J.Garza ( The hype around him was crazy in the 80's Anthony Hembrick ( possibly the most embarrassing knock out after false bravado in history lol).
Vince Shomo and Shawn O'Sullivan - amateur stars who could never make that transition to star pro. Charlie 'White Lightning' Brown - given gift decisions over Louie Burke and Frank Newton to get a title shot. Was totally exposed by Harry Arroyo and never threatened again.
I remember the night my good friend Gene Mad Dog Hatcher from Ft Worth Tx producing , as he called it " The left hook from Heaven" that turned Johnny Bumphus legs to jelly as he did the chicken dance & Lou Duva going ballistic What a night fror Gene
Eubank Jr, David Price, Gerry Cooney, Marvis Frazier, Harry Kid Matthews, Georges Carpentier, Chavez Jr, Conor McGregor (kinda) I won't list any reasons why but it's more likely that someone gets overhyped today than say, in the 20s. Also the children of great boxers are liable to overrating
Geez, good old Audley. There sure was a lot of backing for the guy right out of the gate. Network and solid money behind him from the start. But he really didn't go as far as another amateur star exposed as a pro, JL Gonzales. But Harrison sure did stop developing early and reached his ceiling quick. It's really a testament to that early pedigree that got him some very nice paydays through the years. His effort against Haye may be the single worst effort I've ever seen in a title fight. Or it ties Seldon's against Tyson. Hey there's another fight for Audley to drop---Bruce Seldon. Or how about having Audley take his act on the road and fight in Atlantic City? Sure can't picture him being remotely comfortable as a road warrior.
Michael grant hype was crazy. i can still remember how the american press was Always calling him the real deal while at the same time suggesting the klitschkos were of lesser ability. so much for the credability of ring Magazine.....
