Biggest Failures from Trainers

I'm gonna have to nominate Lou Duva in the Meldrick Taylor-JCC fight. Not only did he tell Mel that he was down going into the 12th round and that he needed to fight to win that round (although in interviews he lies and says that he told him to dance like Ali), he also jumped onto the ring apron after Mel was knocked down, and this distracted Mel when Richard Steele asked Mel if he was okay to fight.

I will always be bitter towards Lou Duva for his indiscretion, not just because of the magnitude of the fight but maybe because of the way that things turned out for Meldrick after that fight. If Lou had just "manned up" and said that he made a mistake and cost Mel the fight, maybe I could have forgiven him. Because of his lies though, I'm always gonna feel ill will toward him.

 

Steward seemed like he knew absolutely nothing about Pavlik, and that showed up in several of his instructions and comments to Jermain.

I think Haglar/Antuofermo is another one where the trainer failed the fighter. They were fighting a mob connected guy in Vegas in 1979! The Petronelli brothers should have lit a fire under Marvin's ass instead of allowing him to coast.

 

If that was true for Antuofermo-Hagler I, then what does that make SRL-Hagler?

Buddy was a crafty fighter and he seems like a good guy but...yeeeeah. "Drink some water, baby."

 

Jack Loew, based on overall incompetence.

 

After Tarver beat Jones and Gatti had a resurgance he was considered 1 of the best trainers in the sport. Some bad results saw him laughed at but I think he's a quality in the gym trainer if not a great cornerman

Mayweather had a pretty epic failure with Hatton, although that may have always happened regardless of trainer

 

Steward has had a few failures like this with Taylor, Vivian Harris, Hamed, Cintron. Steward imo is a bit of a gloryhunter and takes allot of credit for fighters that were already great winning. Obviously he knows his stuff none the less

 

Mayweather Sr and Ricky Hatton What a horrible hook up that one was.

 

You cant make chicken salad out of chicken ****. Harris was shot to pieces, although it was bad advice for him to tell Harris to take the Maussa fight if in fact he really wanted to try and bring him back slowly. Hamed could have carried a baseball bat into the Barrera fight and the same outcome would have happened. He didnt fail Hamed, Hamed failed himself. Same goes for Cintron, you cant inject courage and stamina into these guys, and Cintron, Taylor and Hamed, all had mental flaws that were beyond coaching.

I gotta second and third that one. Not because Hatton lost but because as soon as he lost, Mayweather Sr. basically abandoned Hatton. He immediadtely was talking to reporters putting down HAtton about not listening to him, he doesn't know why he fought liek that.... yada yada.

He should've been by his side right after the fight but he was more concerned about how others view his legacy as a trainer. Ultimate failure.

 

The Maussa fight was supposed to be a showcase for Harris and he should have won early. He was gassing after 2rounds, supposedly down to 135 in the ring. Shouldn't Steward have done a better job. Harris wasnt a bad fighter, he was considered a top dog and the General forum were accusing Mayweather of ducking him. He may well have got the Mayweather fight as both were on the same bill if I remember right. Didn't Steward dump him after this fight too?

Disagree on Hamed, he went backwards under Steward, he's just not the type of fighter Steward excels with, ie rangy athletic punchers.

As for Taylor/Cintron, they are the physical types but again they went backwards under him. Taylor especially had plenty he needed to learn but for whatever reason never developed and was at his best under his first trainer

I do wonder if post 80s Steward was a bit lazier
