I look at this two ways. 1) A mis-match recognized as such before the fight. Tyson Spinks was a good example of this. I remember seeing an article beforehad with a characaturrized illustration of the two fighting; Tyson swining a giant hammer for a fist and Spinks flailing away with an oversized flyswatter held in his glove. The vast majority of people I know and read about thought Tyson would make short work of Spinks. My heart was rooting for Spinks, but my head said this is a mismatch. 2) A mis-match that was supposed to be an all-time great fight or a coming out party for one of the contestants. Frazier Foreman was not envisioned by many to turn out the way it was. Most thought Frazier was just too tough and skilled for Foreman, including me, although I was only 10 @ the time. To many, Calzeghe vs. Lacy was supposed to the passing of a cherry picking champion to the hands of a superfighter in the making. Did'nt work out quite the way many if not most anticipated.
i dunno man. spinks was the last person to beat holmes in the heavyweight division and holmes was the man at that point. So the last person to beat the man in the heavys was spinks, so tyson beat the man that beat the man. Spinks was not some joke. Tyson just eradicated his ass like everyone else during that few years when he was actually hungry.
He said biggest fight. Calzaghe v Lacy isn't even on the same stratosphere as PBF v Oscar, or even Lewis v Tyson. It just doesn't hold the same weight, independent of the outcome, the fight wasn't huge running up to it. Tyson vs Spinks was huge, mainly because of Tyson and what he was doing up that point, but it was a huge event. Honestly don't think most gave Spinks much of a chance, but then again, at that time NOBODY game ANYONE a chance against Mike. Yet, even those who thought Tyson would destroy Spinks had to be surprised with how quickly he made Spinks crumble, the truth is Spinks lost that fight before the bell ever rang, but that was the aura of Tyson at the time, the fear he brought to the opposition. I think that wins hands down what the title of this thread asks. It was the biggest fight, that was an absolute mismatch in fighters.
i hope no one forgot the brutal beating that was bobby gunn - enzo maccarinelli or herbie hide - damon reed
gatti-mayweather was a big fight and a mismatch but again, we all (despite what our hearts said...) knew that would happen
