My list Herbie Hide - Great athlete, speed, I hoped to see allot from the 'dancing destroyer' but the chin and heart let him down Danny Williams - very talented, good genetics, great power, nice technique. Just loved eating way too much and it was more his dads dream that his. With Danny you can't even blame it on the drinks and drugs as hes quite a strict muslim
Jimmie Abbott,,,,,,,,,,South African Heavyweight At one-time looked like the real deal. Then stopped training, and feasted on African Wild Boar.
I remember that ride... then they found that spot on his chin and that spot continued to grow... Ohh, the 90's. Seriously, Golota had the tools and skills to go far and I thought he would. But he had the mental make-up of a jilted cheerleader. Jesus. I never bought the Michael Grant hype though I do remember Michael Katz coronating him as HW champ. Then there were guys like Gary Bell, King Ipitan, Courage Tshabala and Kevin McBride (who came back later as Tyson vanquisher) from the 90's who I never bought.
I watched several of Garcia's fights on ESPN and other venues during the early 90's. Yes, his career took a very steep downward spiral and fast. He had an aggressive style, a big punch and was exciting to watch, but lacked in both chin and defense, which is a bad combination for a guy who liked to mix it up.. Some of his bouts with guys like Jerry Jones and Eric Curry were entertaining matches, even though those guys were basically journeyman.
Maybe the best name too,,,,,,,,, Jukebox Timebomb From Zimbabwe,,,,,,,The President gave him a mansion, jewels, a Mercedes Benz and all the woman he wanted. Won his first fight,,,,,,, then got Knocked out in his second fight. I think he was stoned to death,,,,,,,,
I was thinking Greg Page. He accomplished more than the fighters previously mentioned, but alot was expected of him. In retrospect, it was unfair to expect him to be another Ali. That was alot of pressure to put on a fighter's shoulders. But he did have alot of talent, and obviously didn't train as well as he should have. So, to me he was a huge flop. He had no business losing to David Bey, and I think would have beaten Witherspoon if he trained right.
Nick Wells, Southpaw, with an unbelievable knock-out record in the amateurs. Knocked out Larry Holmes 'twice'. Had many wild knock-down battles with Duane Bobick. Beat Ron Lyle and Earnie Shavers in a regional tournament. National AAU Heavyweight Runner-up. Was expected to fly through the professional ranks. Forgot to train, and read too many of his press clippings.
If Page or Tim Witherspoon bothered to get into top shape, they could have been something special. also despite pulling off the upset of the century. Buster Douglas had the tools to be a great fighter.
