I do need to add that I completely forgot about the WBC Franchise belt. That was so dumb. And all those "special" belts they make up for Canelo when he fights about anybody. I didn't mind the one for undisputed HW tho lol
Like I say Rummy, it's a way of keeping boxing as a sport but all be it a sport that's still manipulatied unfortunately
I have little regard for the major organizations, like the WBA, WBC, and IBF, let alone the IBA, WBF, etc., so I'm not bothering with the latter. The WBA and WBC are #1 and #2 here. The WBA is clearly in the pocket of Haymon. Look at the careers of Leo Santa Cruz and Gervonta Davis for examples. Eddie Hearn has Mendoza Jr. on speed dial, too. On the other hand, the WBC is so blatantly biased towards their Mexican brethren that it nauseates even the strongest of stomachs. The quickness with which Sulaimán has excused his countrymen for their PED use and rolled out the red carpet for so many of them to obtain his trinkets makes this clear as day. Look at what he did to Sergio Martinez so Chavez Jr. could win a belt, or the absolute layup he gave to Alvarez in Matthew Hatton. Heck, the WBC's relationship with Alvarez is itself a testament to what I'm saying. They handed him belts, did an independent investigation into his alleged PED use and cleared him before Nevada made a ruling, acted like a jaded girlfriend when Alvarez distanced himself, and then established a special title for him and a few others for the sake of it. By the way, both the WBA and WBC are chomping at the bit to give Jake Paul a title shot so they can collect a payday. The former said they would like to see Chavez Jr. vs. Paul for a trinket and the latter said they would have ranked Paul in the top-10 had he beaten T. Fury. Personally, I believe they wanted to pair Paul with Makabu to give King a helping hand. The WBO seems a bit fairer when it comes to European/Australian fighters, but no one can miss the reach around Arum and Olivieri give each other. Someone would have to argue against the miracle of Top Rank fighters holding the WBO title at 147 almost continuously since 2009, with the only break in the line being Mayweather beating Pacquiao. Just glance at the records of former or current Top Rank guys to see the convenient shots they got. American-based IBF is most honest because they have to be. They were already subject to a federal investigation under Bob Lee. It's a total mess.
All the sanctioning bodies are a mess. WBA - just look at the Charr nonsense, and their corrupted 'gold' belt. IBF - it has some integrity towards the sport but has no common sense and picks a lucky mandatory of the top 100 and always wants to be the center of attention whenever a big unification or undisputed fight could be made. WBC - probably the most historic but is a mix of the two bad parts of IBF and WBA.
None of this stuff is ever going to chance unless there is only one organization and one belt. Otherwise even if there was one legit sanctioning body with a clear and objective ranking system fighters and promoters will just circumnavigate that by fighting for other organizations. It all starts with only one belt.
You shouldn't have included WBF, WBU and IBA. Two of these are defunct while the third is obscure. You should have made the poll with the rest of the bodies. And WBO also has it's version of interim champion.
IBO is not an obscure body. Less relevant yes, but not obscure. It's title has been held by many top fighters, something that is completely untrue with WBF and IBA. Although many of these also hold other titles, some of them are IBO-only champs. One example is super middleweight champ Osleys Iglesias, who was ranked #3 by Ring Magazine in October, even ahead of William Scull the IBF champ who was ranked #6.
Perhaps it's "the best of the rest," then - but regardless, I think we can all agree that it is utterly unnecessary and duplicative to have even one additional organization granted much legitimacy, beyond the unneeded glut of four that already have attained such status. In short, boxing needs to reduce the number of these parasitic groups, rather than to allow them to proliferate, like the cancer they are!!!
That honestly has nothing to do with anything. The fact that the sport is violent is not the reason to expect foul play at the top. There are so many examples of other things in life that has foul play and it's not violent. The thing we have to remember is that where there is money, there's politics. A LOT of money is made off these world class fighters.....
The 'glut of four' is the real fear, the rest are dying one by one. For example, there were about a dozen(!!!) sanctioning bodies in the 90s, half of which disappeared by the end of 2010s. The remaining will also vanish with time, they need not be feared. The four 'major' sanctioning bodies not only have each other's protection, but also the support and backing of promoters, fans, critics and fighters. They should be the one to be disposed of.
It has everything to do with it The sport has always had questionable "support" and that's fully down to alot of people /companies not wishing to be associated with a violent sport So we got the mob, it's just legal robberies these days
I was wrong by saying it has nothing to do with it, but you are also wrong by suggesting it has everything to do with it. I'm not necessarily disagreeing with what you are saying beyond that.
WBA win this one. With their bollox "regular" belt (which they said they would remove but just lied about that) and their laughable rankings they continue to be the worst of a bad bunch.
