In England it was the foursome of Ali, Tyson, Bruno and Eubank.

Ali was at one point the most recognizable name and face on Earth. When the general person thinks boxing, they think Ali, not Tyson, not anyone else.

Tyson is known throughout the world, then and now, simply by he name Tyson. Fight fans will know who you are talking about when you say Mayweather, but average people wont. They might think it was the second boat that the pilgrims came over on. Guys like Foreman and Ali are known, but they were from a different time. Ali was popular world wide, but you would need to address him by both names to know who you were talking about. Oscar could be a grouch, and PacMan is a video game.

If only we could find someone who transcends the sport like Tyson did. Then we would have tons more interest in the sport itself.

Old timers think Ali before Tyson, NOT the general public. In Canada, GSP is more popular than Ali, and probably always will be. But not moreso than Tyson. Tyson captured the imagination of the general public moreso than any other fighter

Uhhh I don't know how it is in the USA but nobody even knows who Floyd is in Europe ... On the other hand, Tyson is well known by almost everyone. Maybe boxing was also more popular back then ? :think
