Let's not forget Joe Louis. He did a little thing called "The Max Shmelling Shuffle." I hear it was pretty popular back in the day.
Mike and Ali were both insanely popular......Tyson had more of a Pop culture popularity where Ali had a very strong political presence, both on a Global scale. I'd have to say Tyson was probably more popular during their boxing careers based on having the technology to push marketing easier and more efficiently than in Ali's day.
Ali by a landslide. Ali was a cultural icon. his was at one point the most recognizable face on the planet
this. people are confusing fame, which tyson had in abundance, with immortality which elvis has,che guevara has, ghandi has and ali will have when he eventually dies
It's Ali. As can be seen by this quiz where more people named Ali than Tyson: http://www.sporcle.com/games/g/boxing_heavyweight/results That's right mutha****as I brought evidence up in this *****
Floyd and Manny benefit from social networking and being a produce of todays technology. Ali and even Tyson got probably even more media attention even without the help of the internet (America Online did not help Tysons career in the mid 90s) If you factor it all in Ali and Tyson are pretty untouchable in this department.
If its the biggest name in boxing ever then its Ali and tyson isn't even that close. I mean come on Ali will go down as an important historical figure. Its still makes the news headlines in england when he comes over. The rumble in the jungle is most probably the most famous fight of all time. Who did america have to light the olympic torch? Ali! Not only is Ali the biggest name ever in boxing but i would also say in sporting history no one can compare to Ali.
Its close between Ali and Tyson but I would say Ali is probably the bigger name. I mean the man is an icon. Everyone probably has a friend or at least friend of a friend who has a poster of him. The image of him standing over Sonny Liston is massive. His catch-phrase float like a butterfly sting like a bee. Tyson is a close second and most people will off course have heard of him and know he's a boxer. No other boxer comes close to them. None. Not say their arent other huge boxers out there and havent been, but these two are icons at the level of John Lennon, Elvis Pressley, Marilyn Monroe. Joe Louis and Mayweather? come on now. Huge in boxing circles and deservedly so, but not to the general public. Pacquiao is massive tbf, not so much in britain and america though who are the media super-powers lets face it. Still big mind.
