Thomas Hearns vs. Roberto Duran and Pipino Cuevas got me thinking. If those guys had never fought, I’d imagine a reasonable number of posters here would have favored Roberto and Pipino in a fantasy matchup with Hearns … or at least given them reasonable chances. We saw those fights unfold, however, and neither really stood a chance. But what if we TRIED to make mismatches in fantasy matchups between ATGs? How would we do, and where would we start? Some ground rules: They need to have actually competed, and at a high level, in the same division. Don’t put Iran Barkley (I guess we can debate if he meets the ATG standard) in a heavyweight fight against Mike Tyson, even though Iran did actually fight at heavyweight at his well-past-it stage. And let’s not use terrible versions of great fighters — like Ali of Holmes or Duran of Joppy (if we want a middleweight Duran, let’s make it the Hagler or Barkley edition) — because where’s the fun in that? Give us good version of Ezzard Charles or Ray Robinson if we go there, not the ones that hung on too long. Finally, let’s try to keep the matchups within a reasonable range of evolution — yes, Jim Corbett was a fine heavyweight of his day but I’m not sure we need to see Mike Tyson-Henry Tillman II with the Gentleman playing the role of Tillman. So if you want to use someone of more ancient vintage, try to keep him against someone who’s closer to his own time … not just a mismatch because the sport long ago passed his way of fighting. So there’s the challenge. I’ll need to think on it myself, but in the meantime don’t wait for me — protect yourselves at all times and come out posting!
Conn versus Liston, Holmes or Foreman Edit. I just realized Conn is not exactly an ATG, but sure he is a worthwhile contender.
Marciano vs. Patterson Armstrong versus Mancini and versus practically every other Lightweight Hall of Famer except Duran and Arguello. At Lightweight, Duran was a better champion. I was tempted to say Chavez vs Gomez at Junior Lightweight but Gomez was not near his best by then. At super bantamweight it would have likely been a mismatch too but the other way around. Gomez was just a monster and Chavez was way too young for him at 122. So Im gonna pretty much stay away from that except for what I just said. Salvador Sanchez vs Barry McGuigan at 126. Jose Napoles vs Pipino Cuevas and Carlos Palomino at 147, minus maybe for the lucky Cuevas punch.
Conn could literally beat all three of those guys on the right night. How exactly is that a mismatch let alone the biggest?
I highly disagree with this pick. Patterson has a fairly good chance of pulling off the upset. Hell if he had a better chin, I'd flat out favor him.
Patterson's speed would bother anybody near his weight. I fancy Marciano to catch up to him late but you never know
