Definitely Nunn vs Kalambay given how sturdy Sumbu's chin is and was also hard to hit clean. Nunn was not known as a one punch KO hitter and the only one punch KO from Nunn prior that I recall was his stoppage of Curtis Parker who was shopworn by that time.
The only other shocker was seeing No Mas take place. Absolutely no one at the time would have expected a fierce warrior like Duran to pull off a moment like that.
Duran was just coming off a brief resurgence from No Mas with his stoppages of Cuevas and Moore and putting a valiant performance against a prime Hagler only for it to come to a screeching halt from a violent KO at the hands of Hearns. Truly a scary fighter to deal with was Hearns.
Definitely not. He'd never shown anything like that previously (unless there's something I'm missing).
Cuevas and Moore, but yeah I get it. But by Hearns he was just running out of gas. 16 years and 80 fights in with no appreciable breaks, the past 12 years fighting mostly very high level opponents. He just seemed to serve his chin up on a platter. In high sight ii could have happened any time.
Hearns-Barkley 1 for me. That was one of my favorite fights for a long time. I'd show guys that fight if I was trying to recruit them to be boxing fans. It was a short fight, but it had everything. Barkley being lifted at the end, his face a mask of blood, after pulling off the upset, was great. Nunn-Kalambay was suprising, but Nunn was supposed to win, anyway. I just felt bad for Kalambay, given it was his first big exposure on HBO, and I knew a lot of people would just remember him for that. Norris-Brown was fun, but I wasn't even the main event on that card.
1) Nunn-Kalambay. Had decision written all over it. I was expecting a dull, tactical fight. I would have thought that there was virtually zero chance of a 1st round KO by either guy. 2. Norris-Brown 1. Norris was on a long winning streak, and Brown was schooled by the smaller Buddy McGirt a year or two prior to Norris. Brown was down late vs. McGirt and in trouble, plus he had some health problem before originally facing Norris. Was very surprised Norris lost to him. I was only mildly surprised by Barkley's KO of Hearns. I thought there was an ok chance that Barkley would connect with something and hurt Hearns or take him out.
